Half right. Does need new trim upon closer inspection. But, FCP sells a kit with that

https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/vw-steering-wheel-controls-retrofit-kit-genuine-vw-kit-02314

I thought it could be reused, but it is slightly different.

However, it is truly just plug and play. "Additional tools or coding are not required for this simple conversion kit", so don't even need the OBD11/VCDS.
The need for coding is dependent on how the buttons are coded from the factory. In all likelihood they are coded for the default functionality on most cars. But unless FCP is checking your VIN and checking each set of buttons that statement (though likely correct) cannot be guaranteed.

I know of one person that switched from capacitive to real buttons that had to update an adaptation in the Gateway - 19 so that the button for steering wheel heat would work. That button on their capacitive buttons worked before making the swap.

Blah blah blah, OBD11 or VCDS is a good investment whether needed for this button swap or not.

You've already forgotten more about retrofits than I've ever known, so I'll trust your word on it 🤣

I don’t believe APR or Unitronic have tunes out yet for the MK8.5R but I found the numbers interesting for the MK8R. I know a true comparison requires the same dyno but this seems like a huge discrepancy in power figures. Both are 93 octane Stage 2 tunes for a MK8R. How can there be 50+ hp difference?

UNI's results looks similar to eqt stage 2 mk8r.

vs APR stage 2 full torque 93. The apr stage 2 full torque 93 octane tune for the mk8r made 385awhp. Also keep in mind that the apr car is using a stock downpipe while the UNI and EQT mk8rs are probably using an aftermarket downpipe.

Apr's stage 3 Continental turbo tune for the MK8 GTI looks pretty good. With an aftermarket downpipe and mk8r map sensors, and fueling upgrades you might be able to get a little more power out of the mk8r's stock turbo.
