6 Speed Tranny Failure

So today I encountered complete failure in the GTI. I went to shift into second and there was literally nothing there no click, no notch, zero feedback from the shifter. At first I thought I just missed the gear then I realized it wasn't only 2nd but it was also 4th and 6th that were now missing. Its like they completely evaporated!! The shifter is now a sloppy mess and all over the place, however 1-3-5 and Reverse do still work.

Any suggestions on what could have happened and has anyone else seen this happen on the MK7?

I have had a CTS short shifter on the car for about a year now... I'm guessing this is the culprit.

I'm sure this is going to be an expensive fix...

Try to reinstall?

I think its likely that the transmission itself is fine, rather that one of the cables connecting the shifter has popped off.

Going to third a check of the cable end/selector.

I can't think of anything that would cause a failure of 2 4 6 inside the transmission as selectors are usually paired like 1-2 3-4 that sort of thing and are on these. An internal failure would usually be 1 and 2 or 3 and 4 not just even or odd gears.

Just pop the hood and inspect the selector.

Plus the others. I had a cable break at vir with my mazda 6. Thought i toasted the transmission. Was just the cable.

x2. These tranny's are pretty much bulletproof, but since you changed the shifter I would think it's a linkage problem.
Very good to hear the trans are strong

I agree if u lost the even gears its a cable

The tranny's in our car is the same basic design since the Mk5.

They are very robust and have very few failures.

That being said, mine is knocking pretty badly and I'm already in the system to get a new transmission!

It should happen in the next couple weeks. I will let you know what happens.

Ya it's a bit of a pain (or looks like it) which is why I've been slow on installing my short shifter and bushing bracket lol

Ok problem resolved. The problem was the short shifter itself. The splines that connect it to the tranny stripped out. Im sure this has been gradually happening over time and I just never noticed it until it finally went. The short shifter was just spinning on the tranny like a top... I got lucky I was able to make it the shop in time, fucking car got stuck in third gear on the way there. The splines on the tranny were fine thankfully or I would have had a real mess on my hands. Put the stock on back on and I was good to go.
