My hand calls have been pretty much dead on with the readings, so I don't even do them anymore. My best was a trip between Vermont and Maine, definitely not a flat highway drive, and I got 38. Now all of the highway driving was, well, above 75 šŸ˜ Steady 70 or so would likely yield 40 or so. Haven't used my ECO mode much. LOL

I got 36.6 mpg over 450 miles doing 70-75 mph, almost all highway, but while drafting most of the time. Mainly 'cause people wouldn't get out of my way. 2017 GTI DSG.

Yup. My JSW TDI 6MT averaged 42mpg and I drove it like I stole it most of the time.

We did two 600 Mile tanks in our Sportwagen TDI 6M. Both were nailbiters toward the end, but upon filling up, we comfortably had more remaining fuel than we thought.

I did some experimenting a few months ago. I have a rural highway route that I like for testing. At around 60 mph, my IS38 GTI achieved 42 mpg hand-calculated. I had driven over 500 miles on that tank. I was astounded and decided to follow-up with an interstate highway test with speeding and AC use. I got 36.7 mpg on that 200-mile test while driving between 70-75 mph with maybe one or two blasts to 80 for a pass. Then I had to know what I could do with a trailer in tow on my highway route with no speeding. I got 27 mpg, which is better than some GTIs get in daily driving. :sneaky:

Here's the trailer that returned 27 mpg over a 200-mile route:

I can get 30+ mpg with this trailer if only the lid is on top:

Normally, though, I average around 28-32 mpg. I have a write-up about my testing at https://stealthgti.com/2021/07/07/fuel-economy-with-is38/.
