My son's gateway was the little Monoprice printer a couple of years ago, I think it was like $120. Then a Creality Ender 3 V2 Neo for last Xmas, and now the A1 this year. I'm sure the $1400 one is his next step, but that's way past the budget for an 11 year old.
I've been avoiding one for a while, but think they've finally matured enough to the point where I feel comfortable enough to jump in. I didn't want to fuck with the whole "Build it yourself, tinker with the settings, troubleshoot issues, etc..." thing of yesteryears. We're at the point now where it comes 99% setup out of the box, seem to run (mostly) without issues, and for $350 you can print in 4 colors.
I know from previous hobbies, not to do the incremental upgrade thing. Starting with the $350 unit, and if I really like it and use it enough, my next jump will be the $1400 X1C (or whatever the 'top of the line' one is at that time). When I started going down the retro handheld rabbit hole, I had 5 hops between getting a $30 R36S as a starter device, and ending up with the $400 Odin 2 Pro. I should have just jumped right to there after my first device, would have saved me a ton of money. So I won't make that mistake again
