2017 GTI Sport rear ended today

So I’m starting to think I wasn’t meant to own a GTI. In October 2018 I was rear ended on the highway in Denver and my GTI was totaled as a result. I went and purchased a lower mileage GTI Sport afterwards. This morning I stopped at a stoplight and my buddy in his newer Dodge Ram rear ended me at the light. His insurance company is taking care of everything and an appraiser is coming out on Tuesday. Is there a chance do you all think in this one being totaled as well?

No they didn’t deploy. They also didn’t deploy in October when my last GTI was totaled.

Definitely a chance it's totaled.

My sister just had her RAV 4 totaled. Hit from behind, WAY less damage than the pictures above. They took the bumper off to find the frame bent. 16K to repair so they just totaled it.

Wouldn't even want it to not be totaled having sustained that much damage anyway.

Glad you’re Okay. You know, the GTI has been my Eleanor. It has been elusive to the point I just gave up trying to get one despite having the financial ability to buy just about any other car like it.

Some of us just aren’t meant to have one.

Yeah, took a closer look at the pic. Definitely a chance it's totaled. Kinda surprised the airbags didn't trigger, honestly. Hopefully you get a nice new ride as a consolation prize.

There would be little benefit to the occupants from airbags deploying in a car that is hit square from behind, just the deployment itself could potentially cause injury, correctly positioned headrests would have the greatest benefit!

Airbags don't just go off randomly in any type of accident. They go off when the sensors in the specific locations are triggered (either side, or front) by an impact that is above the target threshold. Therefore, a rear end collision will not typically result in the front or side bags going off.

If your car is totaled, it would make for a great donor car to a Sportswagen owner looking to do a GTI conversion (motor, seats, front fascia, wheels, LSD, brakes, etc...). Anyway, glad the car did its job in protecting you, and sounds like your buddy's insurance should make you whole, and he should help drive you around until you find a suitable replacement.

Thanks for the feedback you guys. His insurance is doing great and I’m getting into a rental car today when I finish golfing with him. I’m thinking twice about another GTI but I’m definitely staying in the German family.
