Would you guys run 245/40r17 RT660’s on a 17x7.5 wheel, or is 8” pretty much the min width for those.
Some really good secondhand 17x7.5 wheel deals locally…
Maybe to put it another way: if you had 17x7.5 wheels, what size 660 would you stuff on there for autocross?
It’s STH so I’m not realistically restricted in this scenario.I'd run a 225 or 235 max. 8in min for 245 IMO.
If it's strictly for GS autocross then more tire might be ok and may well be faster but feel like trash.
Why are you going 7.5?It’s STH so I’m not realistically restricted in this scenario.
Yeah, was thinking for 7.5” I’d prob need to run 235/45r17. Not sure if that much sidewall would be too floppy feeling.
Not for autocross it isn't. It is what every GS GTI runs. They don't do it because it's slower.245 is too wide for a 7.5. 8.5 is really the min (to me at least) for that. 225 is the ideal I believe but 235 should work too.
Good to know, I'm not an AutoX person, just going on what the tire manufactures recommend w/r to wheel width and tire sizes that I've seen. What is "GS"?Not for autocross it isn't. It is what every GS GTI runs. They don't do it because it's slower.
If you're going to limit yourself to a 7.5 rim, which is what GS requires, then use 245 40 17.
Obviously, buying an 8.5 or 9 wide wheel is the right answer, but I ran 245 40 17 on 7.5 because I had the setup from my GS setup and wanted to use up the tires I already had on the wheels. I moved to 8.5 after that set, but there was zero issues with 245 40 17 on a 7.5.
Floppy is a function of your tire pressure.I’m trying to keep the costs down. Hard if not impassible to find used 17x8, 8.5, or 9 wheels at a decent price but 17x7.5 is cheap and plentiful. I’m not going for records. I just want to have fun. I run 235/40r18 today on summers, so stepping up to 235 on RT660’s would be a nice improvement.
If 245’s are technically faster but floppy and less responsive, that doesn’t sound like the experience I want.
What made you want to move to a 8.5" wide rim?Not for autocross it isn't. It is what every GS GTI runs. They don't do it because it's slower.

Because the 7.5 required hub rings and also spacers to fit over my Brembos. Craig bought them and uses them to this day on his wife's GS GTI.What made you want to move to a 8.5" wide rim?

Fair question. I’m not THAT great of a driver -- still pretty new — but I’m not at the bottom of the STH pack, and finished first in the class last event of the year on summers against some decent drivers. Not generally competitive in the class overall and don’t expect to be.Maybe I’m going against the crowd on this, and don’t take this the wrong way. But are you that great of a driver to where worrying over abnormal rim/tire combos are going to net you huge improvements? I can understand making sure you spend your money wisely, but rabbit holes can be deep.
I know I’m not, so I stick to a basic wheel size and recommended tire size combo that fits, and just drive. Geeking out on the theories and practices behind so many varied combos was tiring for me. Keep it simple, affordable, drive and have fun.
Your bigger bang is just going to a 200TW tire over a A/S. That you’ll notice. 245 versus 235? Doubtful.
Just my experience.
