A nasty looking rust patch has appeared and my dealer has quoted £534 for the replacement.

My car is approaching 7 years old so was wondering if anyone else has experienced rust on their Sump. Thanks

Jack car up use some 60 grit sandpaper & remove the worse of the rust...then paint on rust converter...then black hammerite of other suitable paint that can cope with 100C temps....

Also retro-fit the full engine bay aero tray which covers the whole underside of the engine bay..also produces better aero & fuel economy..

Hi thanks for reply - it's actually a circular shaped patch of rust about one and a half inches in diameter which - according to the mechanic - could start leaking.

This must mean the rust has gone fairly deep. Unfortunately I currently have a spine condition and have to take it very easy at the moment -so even if I had a jack and the tools to remove the plastic cover I'm in no condition to be able to do it.

I'll have to take what they have said on trust - but I'm very disappointed the rust has appeared.

ask them to photo it & email the pic to you...& yes the smaller engine (1.5lt & under) have steel oil sumps..& yes they do rust easy with our winters & salt...

& £534 is a bit much..any specialist indi VW places nearby??

Not nearby that I would want to visit - there's a travelling mechanic who has quoted £384 but I don't really want my car worked on in my parking space.

I'll just have to go with the franchise quote. Not really what I wanted just before Christmas but I need the car to be 100% .

I'm looking forward to seeing the new MK9 next year. It's already be reviewed and been given 4.5 out of 5 by one of the auto mags.

That's it dealer then.....you ask them to fit the full undertray or "noise insulation" from the diesel engine whilst they are at it...that will fully protect it...

& its the MK8 not the MK9...bit ahead of yourself there...

Thanks for advice.

It might be that the MK9 range around 2026 is fully electric especially if researchers have cracked the Solid state battery nut providing a 500 mile range.
