I think it also has a lot to do with the venue itself. I've seen plenty of bands numerous times, and there have been times where you go "These guys sound like absolute ass", and other times where you go "This sounds incredible.", and the difference isn't the band, but the sound at the venue.

Yep venue acoustics and sound system have tons to do with it. Outdoor shows always sound terrible

Yup. I wonder how many people have seen a band at a place with bad sound, mixed by a bad sound engineer, and written the band off saying "They sound like shit live", when none of it is the bands fault.

Not saying that's always the case, I've seen plenty of bands that just sound like complete shit no matter where you see them. But I'm sure it happens very frequently.
