XJs are awesome. Around here, you can still see them every day.
I miss driving mine. It's been out of commission since I swapped the head years back and the wiring harness caught fire. Hasn't been right since.

I ran it over a year ago and it ran horribly, but started it a few months ago and it fired up and ran like it was brand new. So weird. The only problem is that it won't move. I can push it, but the transmission won't. Fluid level checks out, but I'm at a loss. Finally have money saved to get it fixed, whatever it is. Got to have it ready in March, so I can retire my GTI from work truck duty (something I've been saying since I bought the GTI).

What year XJ?

2001. 107k miles. Bought it with 68k, complete with the ubiquitous '00-'01 cracked head (though was unaware at the time). Changed the head to save the bearings, but of course no good deed goes unpunished.

Have you banged on the NSS? Common problem on the 4.0. Kept mine from starting. What part of the harness was damaged. Pretty sure you can get an entire replacement. Every once in a while I find parts I had for it. I blew the transmission rear seal on the way to work one day. Man talk about a smoke show when it hit the hot exhaust lol. Really the only issue I had. It made it 45 mins each way on 95 down here to work. Its true that they say...Jesus drove a 4.0

*also check out the "Big 7" upgrade. Great upgrade IMO. Stupid encapsulated green wire on the alternator.

It starts and runs great now, but won't move. The gearshift moves but nothing happens. ATF is full.
The whole harness burned at the firewall. The shop that was giving it a state inspection called to tell me: "uh, your Jeep caught on fire, uh, duh."
It wasn't on fire when I dropped it off, so something fishy was going on.

Finding an unmolested replacement wasn't that easy, as there were several different ones for '01 and only the exact part # worked. This is what the shop told me, anyway. Should have just taken it to a wiring specialist.

What head did you swap on?

the AW4 is almost as indestructible as the 4.0.

Are you able to move the shifter out of park? Or is it stuck?

Have you adjusted the kickdown cable at the TB?

Yep, the distributorless system had a new harness. The differences are minimal to be honest just 2.5 vs 4.0, MT vs AW4, 2wd vs 4wd, and selec-trac vs command-trac.

At least you have the HP front and 8.25 rear end. 🤷‍♂️

my favorite mods were the full electric fan conversion, high idle switch, WJ lower arms, and headlight harness upgrade.

The Clearwater Performance iron head. Shifter goes through the gears, but never feels like it is engaging. Transmission has never had an issue and worked fine after the new harness was installed.

How do you like the Tiguan? The misses and I just drove a 2020 SEL tonight and are thinking of downsizing from an '11 Pilot to it. Tell me your thoughts on owning it so far!
In general, the tiguan is an excellent car. Very good ride quality, smooth and engaging transmission (recommend leaving it in sport mode, just feels better IMO), the engine, though the same to the GTI, is torquey feeling, zero turbo lag, feels nice and light on its feet, very predictable. Doesn't feel heavy. Great infotainment system and overall features, even the sound system is decent. Great legroom for rear passengers.

My only gripe, really, is the start stop feature, which you can click off with a button, but when its activated, the drivetrain kinda 'jolts' you when you take off; which i think could be fixed with upgrading the engine mount lol.
