How to retro-fit a bigger capacity battery to a Mk7 Golf

If anyone does this to upgrade from an H5 battery and wants to get rid of their original H5 blanket, hit me up.

the exact same spec which is only from VW....

VW have their own Ah ratings for standard industry case sizes...to force you to buy from them.


You can fit any battery that fits the tray in the car engine bay....

BUT you have to use VCDS or OBD11 etc to alter the coding to tell the BCM what battery it has fitted...

I have question regarding coding new battery on my VW Golf as at the moment I have lots of errors and Forums people advice replace battery as current one is from new (around 8 years) . VARTA 7P0915105, 12V 68Ah 380 A DIN see picture below and my new battery is VARTA E39 AGM 12V Silver Dynamic TYPE 096 but is 70Ah and I believe this need coding as old one was 68Ah. I need some advice with coding as I never done this before. I think to buy OBDeleven and just want to ask if this device can help me with coding? and How to do that.

As I said in the first post if anything is different to the original battery you have to tell the BCM & alter the coding.....OBDeleven can do it....I don't have it as I have VCDS unlimited VIN.....the channels & descriptions are the same from what I have seen of OBDeleven..

When you click on "Battery technology" (using VCDS 21.3.0) a drop down list appears with the following options (= actual meaning):-
Wet = Standard Lead Acid
Fleece = Standard A.G.M.
Wickel6V
Wickel12V
Ultracap
Gel = Standard Gel Lead Acid
Lithium ions = Standard LiFePO4
EFB = Standard E.F.B.
Binary - AGM = "Bipolar" A.G.M. type
EFB+ = E.F.B. "Plus" type

According to various sources of information, including numerous car scans & threads on Ross-Tech, "Fleece" is for standard AGM batteries, "EFB" is for standard EFB batteries, & "Wet" is for standard lead acid batteries, as these settings are used at the factory. The setting of "Binary - AGM" is apparently for specialist "Bipolar AGM" batteries! Also the drop down list is from VCDS & not generated by your car's BCM, therefore, your car may not support all the options on the list, & the BCM will reject the value when you tell it to accept it!

Battery BEM codes are now redundant with the above separate channels. The most important channels are:- Rated battery capacity, Battery technology, & Battery Serial Number. For the Battery Serial Number, just change one digit of the old one. This channel tells the BCM that a new battery has been installed & to relearn the new battery & forget any “learnt values” for the old battery!

Thank You for this info. My question is about serial no. as on my new battery there is a barcode but there is no serial no like on the old one. which no should i put during coding? see picture below/

When I first did this, there wasn't a serial number in the field at all. I just put the day's date in there. Now I know when I installed the battery, if I need it.

I use permanent marker & write it on the battery top...

Today I swapped out the exhausted original Korean battery (car is less than 4 years old... I've never even heard of Sebang batteries...) for a new Varta battery from Tayna - type 096 (£121 delivered).

The actual physical swap was fiddly but easy, and the two batteries are the same physical size so no problems there. Then I used VCDS to change EFB to Fleece, 69Ah to 70Ah, and changed the serial number which had been set to 1111111111 to today's date as 2021062500. A short drive cleared the immediate fascia errors, but I also went onto clear all the error codes using VCDS then go for another drive to see if all is OK. Car seems very happy indeed now and the start-stop works very smoothly.

No problems...I'm surprised that the OEM factory battery is "Sebang" & made in Korea...for a UK spec car built in Germany...that's WTF???...

VW/VAG use Varta/Bosch or Moll......never heard of "Sebang" either....BUT they are fitted to UK spec Skoda Mk3 Octavia's according to a quick Google search of the forums....so obviously a new cheaper VAG factory supplier..

I meant to add - I did *not* do any of the methods to retain power supply to the car, I just removed the old battery and probably spent 10 or 15 minutes or so fiddling about before the new battery was fitted. The only thing that the car appears to have "forgotten" is the long term data in the trip computer - which I didn't care about. The entire infotainment system was unaffacted (radio stations, DAB station logos, car-net configuration etc) and the car even showed the correct time immediately after turning on again.

I have Sebang battery on Tiguan Mk2 too. I was also really WTF when I looked at the engine bay for the first time but it still works despite the car is equiped with SS and ACT systems designed to pretty much kill the car gradually.

I currently have an EFB H5 battery but when the time comes I'll probably get an AGM H5 instead. However, my fabric battery cover only covers the sides, not the top... so would it be safe to still get the AGM with the top being more exposed heat?

The top is not that exposed to direct radiant heat..its more the side facing the engine.

Will I clearly recognize it, if it's already there fitted? It seems to be in a not very easy spot to look at...underneath the battery tray, it's my understanding.

Use a mirror...& its a grey expanded polystyrene....& as your car is the same spec as mine it should be standard fit...
