When do you typically change spark plugs?

It can never hurt to put new plugs in, a good idea to see what your plugs look like at 40k and go from there.

I changed mine out based on the factory interval. you can pickup a set of OEM plugs off of rockauto for around $45 CAD so it's a pretty cheap maintenance item.

It's a straightforward DIY if you want to tackle it yourself.

Aright sounds good thanks for the advice nah my bf can tackle it i dont mess with anything under car hood other then oil change or wiper fluids lol

Yeah so possibly at 80k km or 90k km for me then? As mine is automatic not manual

Changing fluids, spark plugs etc earlier than the manual calls for can do nothing but help your car last longer depending upon your budget of course.

I will do them earlier, like 20k miles. I do not like the idea of anything (especially threaded things) sitting in my engine for 60k miles. I definitely want to get some anti-seize compound on those threads ASAP.

Don't see how this is an issue. I would also advise against anything on the threads unless VW calls for it. Anti-seize acts as a lubricant, you can over torque the plugs without even knowing it and bugger up the threads in the head.

the plug replacement interval is mostly driven lately by the fact that you want to get them out of the head before they weld themselves into the aluminium the heads are made out of nowadays. The platinium and iridium plugs that are so widely used in new cars now can last 90k miles plus but if you don't at least check them at 60k and put them back in then good luck trying to get them out at 90k or after.
The plugs you will pull out at 60k will look almost brand new so when you inspect them and they look great and hold the gaps, you can go ahead and put them back in and then replace at 90k or 100k later. It's the motion of moving the plug threads before 60k that counts.

Personally, if OP is going to pull them out and inspect, at 71k, I'd just go ahead and replace them anyway no matter what they look like. it's near enough to the interval.

See i called a vw specialist of a mechanic that i dealt with before for a full transmission flush and new one in etc he said no too early probably at 90 to 120 thousand in km clicks no idea who to believe lol

My 2017 schedule for all vehicles except electric for USA (included booklet with manual) states every 40k Spark plugs should be replaced in the 1.8 and 2.0T. Shopdap.com says 60k and I can't seem to find my revised maintenance card to double check. I changed mine out at 40k, granted I picked the car up used and figured it was cheap preventative maintenance on a car I knew little about, YMMV.

I read maintenance booklet too that came with my car and it stated otherwise literally said every 4 years whatever km you are on you change it didnt say in km intervals just said every 4 years is...
