Dying sound system?

3 times in the past week or so, I started the car and the infotainment screen remains black. Completely unresponsive to normal button presses, touch screen, plugging/unplugging a phone, etc.

I just scanned w/ VCDS while in this blackout state, and I get "No response from controller" if I try opening module "47-Sound System". Auto scan says "47-Sound System -- Status: Cannot be reached 0100" in the gateway section and "Address 47: Sound System Cannot be reached" below.
  • Turning the car off and back on does nothing.
  • Turning the car off, opening the driver door (which normally triggers the radio to power off), and then turning the car back on does nothing.
  • Holding the radio's power button (forced reboot) fixes the issue, until it comes back later that week.
My three-year non-powertrain warranty expired a month ago ? Any ideas?

After rebooting the radio, 47-Sound System says No fault code found.

There are some Auto Dist Reg issues I've been seeing for a while, and a Frt Sens Drv Assist issue that just happened now for the first time as far as I remember. Taken all together, I could see a potential gateway issue but I'd prefer better opinions than my own.

Auto-scan from just now after a drive, engine off, radio rebooted/on:

Sorry for the abbreviated auto-scans. Apparently a single post here can't exceed 10000 characters, so I had no better option.

Also worth noting that I have done nothing to the Sound System module with VCDS besides reading fault codes... no coding, no adaptation, no basic settings, etc. but the Factory Reset in the basic settings sounds like something worth doing. I haven't tried it yet, though.

In my original post, I said 3 times in the past week. It's now at 6, including the last 3 times the car has been driven (or perhaps the last 6 times, can't remember) so I no longer consider it intermittent.

You try pulling the brains out and checking the wires for a pin coming out of the plug?

I haven't yet. You mean the harness that plugs into the head unit, right? I will check at some point but the fact that it always happily performs a forced reboot when asked, and has no other issues whatsoever besides automatically booting with ignition, makes it hard to imagine a wiring issue.

It's back to being intermittent, by the way. The last 4 drives were 100% normal operation.

Well, even after doing a Factory Reset from the menu as well as from VCDS (Basic Settings), nothing at all has changed. It happens on roughly 60% of startups for like 3 weeks now. Of course my 3 year bumper to bumper NVLW just expired in mid February, and my dealer confirmed there wouldn't be any leeway. They said since a new radio is in the $2000 range, I should consider getting a warranty instead (and then make the radio claim after the 1 month no-claims waiting period).

For about $2200 premium and $100 deductible, I could have another 3yrs/30k miles of full warranty. Or $2870 another 5yrs/45k miles. Or $3230 another 6yrs/55k miles. Includes free oil changes every 1yr/10k (whichever comes first) until expiration, which are about $65 normally, so the premiums could be thought of as effectively $2000, $2545, $2840.

Based on those numbers, having the dealer replace the radio outright is just dumb. I'd certainly explore junkyards for radios before doing that. But there's an interesting twist on this decision: if this warranty they sell me is not underwritten by VWoA, perhaps Safe Guard or whoever else, would that be a tune-friendly warranty? No TD1 business if I were to need powertrain repair? And I could use it even while my 5 year VWoA powertrain warranty hasn't yet expired assuming VWoA declines a claim due to a tune? That's something I'd consider buying even without the radio situation pushing me into it! I just bought EQT base (ecu + tcu) and will be flashing in the coming days.

BTW I am fully aware that a tune has nothing to do with a radio claim. I'm just saying that I'd find additional value in a non-VWoA warranty (beyond the fact that I'll get my radio fixed) in the event that I develop powertrain issues while tuned, if I'm correct that something like this doesn't use TD1.

So your dealership suggest that you commit warranty fraud - classy dealership. BTW, in this pricerange, warranty fraud is a felony.

Open a case with VW corporate and ask for a goodwill repair. I'd also throw the dealership (that is only trying to sell you a warranty) under a bus with corporate. If your warranty just expired, it sounds like you are still within the "miles" but not the "time". Most manufacturers will offer a goodwill repair if you ask nicely and properly.

Finally, there is no "tune friendly" warranty. Anybody that tells you that is just trying to sell you a bridge in Brooklyn.

Come back here if you want help with your letter to VW

Mib module adres 5F needs update to sw 757 mostly fixes the problem if not needs to be replaced but best start to let dealer do update no actuel sw version, and see that fixes error/complained

If engine tuned is normaly no problem for mib error has nothing to do with engine sw, also the update taks only maw 60 min

Yikes! I didn't really think it through, other than for total cost. Now that you mention it, I can't believe it didn't click until now. Between the felony and the lack of tune friendly powertrain, yeah forget it. Let's go back to square one.

Good call. This was my original tactic (asking for some leeway with the recent expiration) but only with the service advisor, not corporate. I'll ask corporate. Indeed, it was 3 years / 36,000 miles and I'm at about 30k.

I'd also throw the dealership (that is only trying to sell you a warranty) under a bus with corporate.
This one is tough for me. They have done me right in the past, and they're half the distance to me as the next closest dealer, so unless the corporate goodwill relies on the snitching, it might generate more grief. And if it's a third-party warranty like Safe Guard anyway (I'm actually not 100% sure), then it's only indirectly a VWoA concern anyway. But I see your point.

Finally, there is no "tune friendly" warranty. Anybody that tells you that is just trying to sell you a bridge in Brooklyn.
Thanks for clarifying this. There are tuner-provided warranties like APR Plus which do warranty tuned powertrains, and there is the VWoA warranty which does not, so I wasn't sure about third party warranties.

I would love any advice on this. Thanks for setting me straight.

Are there any anecdotes you can link to that support this? I agree it's worth a shot, but I had no problems with the stock software version until now. Maybe it's the reprogramming process itself, rather than actual bugfixes between versions, that causes the problem to be solved.

$2200 for just 3 yr/30k more coverage? That sounds insane. That price SHOULD be very negotiable - and the markup should be huge, so a hefty discount should be possible. Still not sure that I'd want to pay more than about $1k for it though. And if I did I'd have ZERO qualms about waiting the 30 days than having the radio covered under it.

Right - so you are in a better position

Probably not necessary, but the dealer could have asked for a goodwill repair for you but they are more interested in gouging you for an aftermarket junk warranty.

Thanks for clarifying this. There are tuner-provided warranties like APR Plus which do warranty tuned powertrains, and there is the VWoA warranty which does not, so I wasn't sure about third party warranties.

And if you read the APR warranty you see enough loopholes to drive a Mack truck through. Double the OCI, no non-APR mods, all warranty claims done at an APR dealer etc.

I would love any advice on this. Thanks for setting me straight.

Here's what you need to put into your letter. It should be a real letter, with a stamp, sent registered mail.

Date of first service, current mileage. State that while you understand that you are out of warranty by time, you are still under mileage

A factual state of the problem, emphasizing that this is an unusual failure that you believe is a manufacturer's defect

Ask for a goodwill repair. If you've owned prior VWs before then mention that as well.

Be factual, not emotional and you've got a good shot at getting all or part of the repair paid for.

If you want to draft a message and post it here, then we'll be happy to help massage it.
