Do you guys think I would have any luck asking them to check out the metal trim around the shifter. I’m well out of warranty, but I’ve been cut by it twice, so that means it’s a safety issue... guessing that would get there attention quick.

Yes, there have been reports of people getting it fixed out of warranty. Check the thread here:

If your dealer gives you push back, show them that thread. If they insist, find another dealer and/or open a case with VWoA (1-800-428-4034).

In any case, you should report the issue to the NHTSA: https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/

VW is unlikely to issue a recall (which at this point it seems like the problem is prevalent enough to warrant doing so) without external pressure...

I've been getting this issue on my 2017 Golf Wagon.
However, I'm in Australia, and there doesn't seem to be a recall here for the issue ...

Any Australians experience this issue?

Hi lordvader, I'm in Sydney with a 2015 Golf Wagon so out of warranty. Been getting the "Leave vehicle only when selector lever is in position P" intermittently since just before Christmas. Got a definitive diagnosis today from my VW specialist (not the VW dealer). Also found today that I can remove the key without being in park--not every time but often enough. The fix requires replacing the selector mechanism--just because of a faulty micro-switch. Crazy! Waiting for a quote.

In light of the US recall and the obvious safety issue I'll be putting pressure on VW to come to the party. (I note that you should be able to get yours done under warranty.)

First experienced this as intermittent issue just outside warranty. As it went away the garage didn't want to know. It became a bit more persistent today (over a year out of warranty) but reading this thread made me wonder if I could get out of it by doing something different. Moving back and forwards in normal automatic mode did nothing but I then tried pushing the selector over to manual shift and slowly worked it up through the gears and back down again on a short piece of empty road. Problem went away.

I appreciate this isn't a full fix but has managed to get the switch working again and thought it might be worth sharing.

Will keep fingers crossed and see how long it lasts.
