Creaking doors? Mystery solved

This^^^^^. I just don’t understand why people resort to tubing when it’s such a simple fix.

Tubing was less expensive than sailkote/krytox and...

Not at all because the window does not contact the door top flap

You’re not reading what I wrote and looking at the photo. I’m not talking about the top of the door. I’m talking about the seal (which is similar to the one at the top of the door) at the top of the window frame that the window contacts when it is up. If I lubed that felt, it would touch the glass.

I determined that on my car I was creaking from that area quite a lot. I believe it was my main source of noise. It also explains why people report that when they roll down their window a tiny bit they don’t hear it anymore.

Yes I misunderstood. No I wouldn’t put lube in that spot.

I’d expect that you’d get it on the window. But I can’t say for certain.

Seriously though, you’re not reading what I wrote. I, and others, have had the same symptoms where the creaking stops once the window is cracked open the tiniest bit. I’d be very surprised if you didn’t have success with Sailkote on the door top felt.

I haven’t looked around much but it’s not expensive. First hit via google.

Yeah once you pay their $10 shipping it’s more than the tubing was. I know for certain my creaks were from that inner seal. I could literally press the window and hear them from the inside or outside, so for now the tubing is doing the job. Just need the right tubing since the original stuff I had failed to do the job after a while.

Sorry to revitalize and old thread but the information here helped me as did a reddit post about the same topic. I wanted to share that I believe any PTFE based Dry Lubricant spray will achieve the same result. I purchased a WD-40 Specialist PTFE Dry Lube from Home Depot (https://www.homedepot.com/p/WD-40-SPECIALIST-10-oz-Dry-Lube-300059/204960991) and it seems to have solved the same problem. I sprayed the outside felt and took a towel and wiped out the inside track of it as well while I was at it. It's nice and quiet now. Hopefully this helps people looking to source something locally to solve the problem.

Good info. I was thinking the same when I was sourcing some Sailkote, but decided to just bite the bullet based on others advice. Thx for sharing.

I still think that the Sailkote (dry lube) on the felt is all that I needed. But I started with Krytox (wet lube) inside the rubber flap first. So I can’t say for certain.

And I can report that I have not had to reapply. First and only Sailkote application was June 2018.

I have to reapply Sailkote and Gummi Plefdge every 2 months or so. It works but it certainly doesn't last very long for me.

Which version of the Krytox did you use?

GPL-205

$20 for 0.5oz from tmcindustries.com

Thank you! I am becoming more and more confident that the issue is the inner rubber part, and not the felted one. That would explain why something like Gummi Plefge is not long lasting when applied to the rubber, while you haven't had issues with Krytox.

How much did you use per door? And how did you apply it?

No problem. It’s definitely worth a shot, for $20.

It’s a grease so obviously a little goes a long way. I applied wearing a latex glove, holding the flap open with the other hand. Put a bit on gloved finger and run it back and forth inside the flap. You get the idea.

Looks like it’s available on Amazon for a decent price now. Wasn’t the case when I bought it last May.

Krytox GPL 205 Grease, Pure PFPE/PTFE, 0.5 oz Tube https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MWLDALQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_qhV4CbHPJBPX5

Thanks again! Did you apply this to all contact rubber seals? (Doors, sunroof, etc.)? If so, how much did you have left? Debating if I need the 2oz once instead.

I only applied it inside the felt. Nowhere else.

I had tried Gummi Pledge initially on other rubber seals but it didn’t make much difference. Focus on Krytox in the flap, Sailkote on the felt.

I’d say there’s probably half the tube left. Hard to say because it’s so light. I didn’t use all of it. Haven’t had to reapply.

Maybe buy 2 from Amazon. That will get you the free shipping. Return one of not needed. Just an idea.

I finally got around to applying some Sailkote and it made a marked difference. I already had a strip of TapeCase UHMW across the top of the door frame where the felt contacted there, but this allowed me to spray the felt where the window closes as well.

One thing I will say is the spray can has way too much power for our small application, and this stuff sticks pretty hard to any surface it touches. I think I managed to get it all off of the paint and glass where it oversprayed, but there is still some on my plastic wind deflectors. I'd recommend using painters/masking tape around the felt and some newspaper taped to the outside of the door below the window as well when applying Sailkote. There is a pretty strong odor associated as well, so plan to leave your windows down for the rest of the day after application.

As I posted earlier, spray some into a small plastic container then use a rag / foam paint brush / something similar to apply the sailkote to the door top felt areas.

Move on to getting some Krytox grease for INSIDE the felt flaps if you still have some noise.

I have not yet had to reapply after the first application! [emoji1303]
