Hope the assembled company can tell me how many RPM at 70 mph in top gear for the following Golf VII UK engined cars:

1.4 122hp TSI 6 speed manual
1.4 122hp TSI 7 speed DSG

1.6 105hp TDI 5 speed manual
1.6 105hp TDI 7 speed DSG

1.6 110hp TDI Bluemotion 6 speed manual

If anyone has the SV, it would be interesting to know if the figures are different.

Thanks.

I forget the RPMs of my car at 70MPH but 2300 seems about right. Mere tickover / idle speed though: at an honest 70 (officer) my 'poor' 5-speed Seat Leon was (relatively) screaming at 3600, felt a bit brtutal but needs musted at the time so I used to increase the radio volume....

not a UK member here but I have an RPM related question. Idle RPMs. Has any of you noticed that having fan/blower set to 1st position (AC is not engaged as far as I can tell, no defrost) increases idle to 800 (from ~700). Why is it so? Not even turning on/off low beams (can't easily disengage DRLs) makes noticeable difference the way cab air does.

Same engine in a Golf with DSG, I would say it's the same at around 2300. Not 100% sure but from top of my head I remember it's less than 2500 and more than 2000 :D

At an indicated 70mph (actually 66mph) - 2400rpm
At true (GPS) 70mph (indicated 74mph) - 2500rpm

This is of course when using the comedy over geared sixth cog.. It's really only there for fuel economy purposes. IMHO fifth is for driving in and sixth is just too long a ratio for anything other than cruising on the flat.

The engine management is very smart - it increases RPMs for all kinds of inputs. Steering input, electrical loading, even lifting your foot off the clutch when in gear it'll bump the RPMs slightly to give you a bit more torque for pulling away.

1.4 (125ps) TSI DSG - just under 2400 at 70mph indicated speed. Was hoping for a little less than that, tbh. (A fan of taller gears and quieter cabins - would never get why VW choose 7th at 40mph!). Still, a great leap from my prev diesel though, doing 3k in 5th at 70.

Amazed by the gearing of the Bluemotion 1.0 TSI - 65mph/2200rpm. Guess the same as the 1.4 TSI. Longer gears than old 1.9 TDI!

I've not driven one but I wouldn't bother with a 1.6 TDI - the two litre is a beast and is able to deliver amazing MPG. Don't know the exact figure but at 70mph/6th it's barely above idle lol.

I have driven one (!) and would say it depends on what you want, I've never needed the extra power that the 2l has so I am more than happy with the 1.6 and the better fuel consumption... Everyone to their own!
