Updated Maps for Discover Media/Pro Available

Just spotted that Navteq have released updated maps for both Media & Pro units - these are based on Q3/2012 rather than Q1/2012 (which is what was supplied with my car just a few weeks ago). If you currently have version "21" on the Discover Media, then you have the older Q1/2012 maps and can download a free update from the navteq web-site below:

The Discover Media update includes an interesting new folder on the SD Card called 'styles' (in markets\eu\map) that contains lots of configuration files - most are in easily readable xml format (some even contain comments from the author) together with bitmaps in png format for all the POI's as well as other stuff like the vehicle icon (arrow in a circle) on the map. As a test, I tried replacing the vehicle icons with my own and these worked just fine so looks like plenty of opportunities here for those that like to hack their systems to be a bit more unique...

Hi Boggle, are the POIs in a separate folder / can you see what format they're in? Just wondering if there's a way to add your own POIs as that sems to be a problem for people with just the Discover Media kit?

The POIs are stored with the rest of the map data in the mapregions folder. They are PSF (Physical Storage Format) files. PSF appear to be just containers for (compressed) sqllite tables.

Officially, it's not possible to add our own POIs to the Discover Media - that function is only available on the Pro version. However, in the testing I've carried out, I've found the unit will read any valid PSF file it finds in the mapregions folder - including additional POIs (the filenames are not actually important).

It's now clear that the Discover units are based on Elekrobits 'Street Director' navigation software - both units use the same kernel software. I've not yet been able to get hold of the spec for the PSF file format to reverse engineer the exact format that these units need. I've tried creating a vanilla PSF with a few POIs in it but the unit didn't like it (not surprising as I don't know the correct version number/supplier codes it's expecting to find).

I doubt (hope) it'll be long before someone figures out the correct format and releases a POI utility to let us produce PSFs in the required format though.

the easiest way to update discover media and discover pro devices navigation is to download "Discover care" an official VW software. Just insert your VW SD card into your computer (but unlock it first-move the little slider on the card to unlock position), run the program and the program will let you know if there is any new update available for your device.

Hope your well, I have a 2014 Golf GTI MK7, and the navigation is playing up. I have carried out a full system reset via the menus available.

Regarding the link to download the app:

Once downloaded can you tell me how I can update the s/w on the unit in the car please?

Am I to update the navigation software through the navigation menu only or will this download update the firmware and nav software?

Your assistance is much appreciated.

Hello,
You have to take the sdcard from your car, put it in your computer and run the app...the app will tell you if the update for your navigation is available. If so, you just click update and wait,after the update is finished, you just put the sdcard back in the slot in the car and voula..nothing else.. It worked for me..you dont do nothing in the car...but this app work only for discover media and discover pro systems...

If there are any difficulties let me know.

I'm sorry, i did not read your post good enough.
This program will only update the map database on your sd card not the sofware.

Thank you jackorsen88 but what is this file. I don't understand German so I'm not sure what it is I'm downloading. I am trying to find clear instructions on how to update the maps on a Mac but I can't seem to find anything. The dealer is hopeless
