another German road & track review:

http://www.sportauto.de/supertest/v...-der-beste-golf-gti-aller-zeiten-7520214.html

If you don't already know these:

German magazine Sport Auto 09/2013:
"ROCK AM RING" - Opel Astra OPC vs Renault Megane R.S. vs Ford Focus ST vs VW Golf GTI Performance

Another German magazine comparing BMW 125i, Ford Focus ST, Mercedes A 250, VW Golf GTI:

http://www.auto-motor-und-sport.de/...kompaktsport-duell-neu-aufgelegt-7017635.html

The European Mk.VII comes with a two-stage ESP, normal and sport, the
latter acting later and smoother compared to it's predecessor.
It cannot be switched off completely though. This remains reserved for the
Mk.VII R. The US GTI will hardly have a different ESP.

(I have read an interview with Dr. Hackenberg, where he said exactly this)

The German magazine "Sport Auto" did a comparison between Golf 7 GTI Performance
(comes with the VAQ diff, 17" brakes and 230 HP) against the Ford Focus ST (250 HP):

laptime Hockenheimring short circuit:

Golf GTI PP: 1:18,0 min
Focus ST: 1:18,7 min

Golf GTI/Focus ST:

Slalom 18 m: 69,2 km/h / 67,4 km/h
acceleration 0 - 100 km/h: 6,2 s / 6,6 s
stopping distance (after 10 stops) 100 km/h - 0: 35,9 m / 36,4 m

No surprise - the GTI won !!!

Laptime and all the other disciplines are excellent. Contrary to the ST the GTI remains
predictable all the time. Steering and traction are great and this with smaller wheels
and tires, 7.5x18 w/225 on the GTI and 8.0x18 w/235 on the ST.

The current Cupra's laptime is simply remarkable:

Hockenheim:

Audi RS3 SB - 340 PS: 1:15.4
BMW M135i - 320 PS: 1:15.7 (Michelin PSS)
Seat Leon Cupra 280 - 280 PS: 1:15.3 (Bridgestone RE050A)
Golf VII R - 300 PS: 1:16.0 (Bridgestone RE050A)
Alpina B3S Coupé E92 - 360 PS: 1:16.1
Scirocco R - 265 PS: 1:16.3
Opel Astra OPC - 280 PS: 1:16.9
Seat Leon Cupra R 1P - 265 PS: 1.17.0
Golf VI R - 270 PS: 1.17,0 / 1:17.9
Megane 3 RS Phase 1 cup (2009-2011) 250 PS: 1:17.1 (Trophy: 1:16.4)
Golf V GTI by Raeder - 260 PS: 1.17,7 (225/40 Hankook RSS)
Golf VII GTI Performance - 230 PS: 1:17.8 (225/40 R18 BS S001)
Ford Focus RS - 305 PS: 1.17.8
BMW 435i Coupé - 306 PS: 1:18.6
Scirocco 2.0 TSI - 210 PS: 1:18.6
Megane 2 RS Phase 1 Trophy (2005) 225 PS: 1:18.8
Golf VI GTI Edition 35 - 235 PS: 1:19.0
Toyota GT86 - 200 PS: 1:19.4
Golf V R32 - 250 PS: 1:20,3
Civic Type R - 200 PS: 1:21.3

Nürburgring Nordschleife:

BMW M3 Coupé E92 - 420 PS: 8.05 (PS Cup)
Alpina B3S Coupé E92 - 360 PS: 8:14 (PS2)
Golf VII R - 300 PS: 8:15 (BS RE050A)
BMW M135i - 320 PS: 8:18 (Mich. PSS)
Opel Astra OPC - 280 PS: 8:20
Audi S5: 8:26

Porsche 911 Carrera (993): 8:28
Golf VII GTI Performance - 230 PS: 8:29 (BS S001)
Audi TTS Coupé: 8:29
Porsche Boxster S: 8:32 - Sport Auto (12/1999)
Golf VI R - 270 PS: 8:35

69,7 km/h at 18 m slalom - not bad and even qucker than the Mk.VII GTI.
Certainly tire related (235/35 R19 RE50A instead of 225/40 R18 S001).

Remember the Cupra is basically a Mk.VII GTI Performance with the bigger turbo
EA888 3G engine and slightly stuffer suspension. Let's say, it's a "GTI Edition 40"
with different looks.

With the Performance pack (4-pots and Michelin PS Cup2s) it'll be even quicker:

Yes, gentlemen, this is oversteer !!!

Does s.o. know why the R's water tank is on the opposite side compared to other Golfs?

on the rolling road:

295 PS - as usual, certainly some "other" rolling road owned by someone with financial interests are more optimistic
. . .

checking geometry alignment:

the alignment data was asking for some questions (about -2° front camber)

The Leon Cupra has been reviewed again in the current issue SportAuto (1/2015).
This time with Performance Pack and Michelin PS Cup 2 semislick tires.
69,7 km/h at 18 m slalom with the Bridgestone RE050 - not bad and even quicker
than the Mk.VII GTI.
Certainly tire related (235/35 R19 RE50A instead of 225/40 R18 S001).
Fit 8" wide wheels and proper 235s to your GTI and it should handle similarly.
With Michelin PS Cup 2 semis it's even stunning 71 km/h - this is 911 GT3 territory !!

Chris Harris - M235i vs Golf R:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?x-yt-cl=85114404&v=TtOZNp6GOxI&x-yt-ts=1422579428

a French review - Seat Leon Cupra PP vs Megane RS Trophy-R:

To me it's highly impressive to see the Leon (which is a GTI Edition 40 in disguise)
as quick as that limited quantity radical Megane RS. This proves the MQB/GTI is
very competent. The above comparison of Golf R and M235i basically says the same.
