The goal behind this build is to end up with a road legal usable car that can hang with a 997 GT3 around a road course, and costs a 3rd of the money.
Project started mid-Sept-16, and working with Achtuning.com, and Kelly Campbell this beastly little GTI is already not far off.

Wow you have some big things in store for your car. I guess you said screw the warranty eh? I'm also thinking is38 in the future for my ride. I'm eager to see how yours turns out.

Damn that's some serious modding all at once. Must have a lot of money to play with.

Congrats! I did probably less than that in my 3 years ownership

Enjoy man.. Go for 235/40/18 PSS instead. You are gonna need the extra traction

Why not just start with a r?
Good question, the R is the superior model as a daily, but for my use case the value for money didn't seem to make sense.
Originally wanted an R, but getting one with DSG is really difficult, and getting one with DSG and paying MSRP or less is near impossible. I love track days so with the exception of the IS38 turbo swap the R would need every other modification being made to the GTI. The AWD traction is great, for sure, but I paid $27k-ish for this GTI and that $13k+ extra goes to work in other areas. At some point race seats will go in, replacing base gti cloth seats seems more acceptable than fancy leather R seats.
Its a stretch to find compelling justification outside of value, but the GTI is 200-300lbs lighter which likely results in a small advantage outside of a dig? And in specific conditions Borg Warner claim the VAQ / FDX pp diff out performs AWD haldex (Watch their VAQ tech presentation, it's long but informative https://vimeo.com/102644851) which I guess is evident in the record holding GTI Clubsport.
Why no Coilovers?
Drawing the line somewhere for the first set of mods :)
Coilovers, exhaust, comfortable race seats, tints, and light weight wheels are next.

Thanks.
I looked at 235's but didn't know if 235's on a stock 7.5" wheel would rub.... going to get wider wheels and tires, just need to work out how wide I can go without rub. Stock is 225/40 = height 25.1"

edit
Went with 235/40/18 PSS on an 18x8 wheel

Can do, I record with harry's laptimer anyway, be interesting to see if I get around The Ridge Motorsport parkway quicker than I did in my S4... It better had :)

Sweet build. I was in the same situation earlier this month and opted for the R (paid $9k more for the R - felt like a better "deal" than the sport). Part of the reason is that I decided that the engine on the R would be enough for me as-is and so by going that route I could keep warranty intact. Also this will be my only car so having 4wd means I can take the car to tahoe (can't put chains on a GTI). I'm sure this will be a more interesting outcome though.

Man what a build list already! I just picked up my '17 Sport on Saturday, no plans quite like this but I love it already! Can't wait to see what yours becomes!
