I want to remove the silver strip on the front grill and the R badge. Has anyone done this? The R emblem seems like it is a clip on. I imagine the silver strip is glued on? I might vinyl wrap it glossy black to match.

If you remove the R it leaves an unsightly 'shadow' as the grille is molded to support the emblem.. Better off to just buy a new grille without an emblem or stripe

It's glossy black how bad could the shadow be? ?
Also I like the VW logo in the grill which I will replace with a glossy black vw emblem. I haven't seen any aftermarket grills I like...

Here is the grille fully taken apart (minus the chrome stripe). Taking off the R badge does NOT leave an unsightly spot. It screws in from the back with a torx

In order to get the chrome stripe off, you need to separate the glossy black front from the rear. It takes while to get all of the tiny clips apart. I used little screw drivers, three at a time. Pop a screwdriver in each grouping of three clips, and pull it apart. The move on to the next grouping of three clips. Keep going until it is apart. You can then separate the chrome stripe from the grille front by releasing the clips on the back side. If you want to take off the chrome ring, the large VW emblem needs to come off first.

Glad to see this. The silver front accents on the r are really unattractive imo

For some reason Tapatalk has me under my other username when I post through it (normal username is CKGOLFMK7). But at any rate, here are a few pics I snapped while doing the grill mods. Mind you, this was on my 2015 LSG R, I now have a 2016 Oryx White R and plan on doing the same to it.

After grill removed:

Got inventive with extra membership cards etc. to hold clips open on the back side of the grill.

Grill completely disassembled.

Put back together, finished product. Also did a badge overlay from badgeskins both front and back on the emblem.

Hope this helps.
