DIY 2nd "cabin-filter" (different that the cabin-filter located behing the glove-box)

Hi there,

So I get pictures of a mod I did last October and decided to share with you all!

I've found on the Chinese E-bay (Taobao) that the Golf MK7 (all model) can be fitted with a different "AC Inlet*" part housing an additional filter for the cabin!.
(*: I'm not sure how to call it and apologies about my missing English' vocabulary...^^)
Here are the pictures of the part before/after with my stock part (on my desk) and the picture from Taobao for the modified version.
(both stock and modified one have rubber seal on their bases)

Concerning the install,
It is quite simple and here is the install operation from the website:
AC Inlet Filter install.jpg
details by me:

-simple lift off the left side of the cover between engine-bay and windshield.(you can also fully pull it out, it give you more room access to the 3 nuts holding this part you want change)
-remove the black rain-protection under this cover:
pull the end near the middle of the windshield toward the front off the car, then pull all together to the opposite side of the windshield.
(it is quite simple and easy to figure out when you see it^^)
-unplug the sensor you have.(tool to take off inside panel is useful there but nor mandatory)
-take out the factory part
-put the new part with its filter then proceed the otherway.

The result is as bellow:
(picture is taken after nearly 4months... quite dirty there but the filter I choose is a gray/blackish one that it says filter better)

Total cost 85rmb with delivery. (55 the body, 16 the filter, rest was delivery)

For the result,
I do think the air quality improved inside the car, but surely the cabin-filter located behind the glove-box get a lot longer to get dirty, meaning that you also can have cleaner air if you decide to put the AC on recycle-mode because of dirty road!

I think it's little money well-spend and quite an easy mod to do by yourself.
I'm guessing this part can be find on E-bay but didn't looked for it because it's useless here in China compare to Taobao...

Do the same... filter the air for the cabin.
The point is having 2 filters instead of one.
=>fighting DUST and MIST

for example:
Using only the filter behind the glovebox, this one get dirty relatively quickly.
When you put air-recycling, the circuit is closed at the windshield, so the air using through the vent is filtered again and again through the very same filter behind the glove-box. If this one is dirty, the air is not cleaned very well and could feel uncomfortable in long term like the air become thicker.

With this secondary filter which is place just before the open/close circuit (at the windshield), it is this filter which maintain most of the dust and a little humidity outside the air circuit.
Like this, the air is cleaned a 1st time prior going through the cabin-filter of the glovebox.
The stock cabin filter get less dirty and can be use longer before you need to vacuum it, and the air is more breathable and with less mist when you put on the recycling mode if needed (tunnel, heavy dust, smoky trucks outside...).

This filter I'm talking about is indeed very useful.(in my mind and use here in China)
But of course, you can live without it ^^

I know the feeling SandmanGTI, there are specific brand really hard to find in China.

I've just found a shop selling ECS parts and they can get me a Hatch-Pop Kit (008595ECS01 / ES#2972830) at 600rmb in around 1month.
(I think the guy is mistaking with his price because I don't know how he can get margin on a 95US$ price on ECS-tuning website without transport...)

But yes, also some problem to find specific parts for my Golf here.

Would be hard to know how to order here. Unless there is a USA dealer.
Any info on such.
Interesting item.

Oh, and with the right name of the part, it would maybe be more easy to find...
I'm talking about secondary cabin-filter and other names but there should have more specific one I guess...

I'm sorry for my basic English vocabulary (and grammar...) and hope you'll find something.

Wow this is a cool mod! I'll look into this as well, we really need to find a part number :)

Edit:

The default part we're talking about is:
5Q0815479
http://www.partsbase.org/parts/vw-5q0815479/

That's the intake manifold:

Hopefully more info later, I hope I'll find a part number for the grille with filter.

It looks like all we need to is open up this grille, insert a filter in the right size here, and clean air will be a fact :)
I still have a spare carbon filter I was once planning to install in my Tesla Roadster.. it might fit in here with some adjustments.

If you guys can't find something outside of China, you could simply adding a filter there by yourself...
Maybe like this:
-take off this plastic part,
-stick a filter under this grille
-have to find a way to fix it! It must not touch the rotating part that close/open the recycling cycle.
-then put back the plastic part in place...

Must be better to close the vent 1st so you can have a look if you have enough place to stick a filter between the closing/opening door and and the grille.

Only thing would be to clean it... not easy because have to take off everything each time compare to the part I purchased here in China where I can pull out the filter without taking out the support...

Thanks for posting this. I was an expat with my family in China for a few years and decided to take the family back early because my son developed asthma from the damned smog in China. I wouldn't live in China again unless they clear up that air, it literally was slowly killing me and my kids. Best of luck with you.

Yeah, Smog is quite the problem in China but it's for big Cities like Beijing/Shanghai and depends locations...
I'm located in the suburbs of Ningbo which is lot smaller than Shanghai and despite a lot of manufacturing industries, the ocean's air helps keeping air pollution "relatively" low...
(I'm not fan of big cities also)

The mod about this secondary filter wasn't on PM2.5 pollution but mostly for smell/confort and dusty roads sometimes on trips...
