DSG Strength in Golf R

For the tuners out there, what numbers are you seeing that are safe for the DSG? I'm wondering what the recommended limits are, especially for a daily driver. I'm shocked what these cars are making with a simple tune but want to make sure it isn't too much for the twin clutch transmission in the long haul. Any tips or shared experience is appreciated! :)

The DSG is stronger than the MT. At least on the MK6. Should be the same with the MK7.

Don't use LC at 4,000 RPM and you should be fine. I didn't get mine yet but here's what I plan to do - try LC at 1500 RPM, 2000 RPM, etc. until it just takes off briskly. Only use max LC RPM if someone wants to run for $1,000. It always shuts people up.

That's interesting... I've never tried launching the car other than flooring it to 3500 or 4k. I mean I've only launched it about 5 times so maybe I'll give that 1500 + 2000 rpm launch a try... I'll let you know how it goes.

But fYI with the APR stage 1 and intake the thing goes like a bat out of hell... It's quite hilarious

Oh I can only imagine. These stage 1 tunes give a lot more bang for your buck than what I'm use to (coming from a Exo X). So what I"m hearing is as long as you don't launch the car like you stole it, the DSG can handle this extra power and tq as a daily driver.

I'm surprised someone hasn't found the TQ threshold on these, but I'm sure it will happen in time as people push the limits further and further on this platform.

Thanks for the input guys! I won't be tuning until next year (just dropped some cash on installing the VWR springs and Spullen spacer kit). I'm leaning between APR and UM tune from what I've read so far.

I'm told that stock DSG software max torque level is 400lbs/ft before slippage. If you get DSG tune then can handle slightly more but I'm told 500nm at wheels is the safe level due to hardware.

Hence the reason that APR on stage 2 software kept torque levels under that 400 mark until DSG software released and then should release tune with slightly higher torque.

I've heard these levels from Harding Performace who are head of APR in Australia and also DSG specialist. This has been found from their extensive testing on release of both stage 1 and 2 tunes and even testing the e85 tune.

I'll personally end up at stage 2 once they release the higher torque version to take advantage of the hardware. I never plan on using LC where it seems most of the slippage issues occur.

You could get the dsg tune and have them set the LC at 3k. Other than doing that any RPM lower than 4k is not even really launching, hence why its probably is easier on the trans.

I have APR stage 1 and admittedly haven't even used the LC yet. I think I'm saving them for the strip. Hahaha.

DSG software does nothing to prevent slippage. It provides no more clamping force than stock. Call any tuner that makes DSG software and ask them. They might you it quickens shifting. Ask them for quantitative or empirical data for any claims.

And I'm not saying stop at 2,000 RPM. Could be 2,500 is good. Just remember that at those speeds you're definitely going to have some clutch slippage. It can't be helped. If you didn't the wheels would just spin. So the only question is, how much is acceptable before you prematurely wear out the lining on the outer clutch? Buy the VW extended warranty and be prepared to flash back to stock before going in for service.

It is supposed to slip I thought? I thought the great thing about the dsg was that the only thing you wear out by launching is the clutch packs. Of course it is harder on it but nothing even close to launching a Manual car the same way.

I never said anything about the TCU tune preventing slippage all I said was you can program the real LC to 3k as an option in the tune.

Is there a way to change the LC setting in a stock R? Lower it I mean?

You don't have to mash the gas until the RPMs hit the launch limit. If you want to launch at 1500 or 2000 RPM, just don't give it any more gas. That is what I used to do with my GTI.

So to be clear what you do is:???

- Engage launch control using the normal procedure but you release the brake as the rpms rise before letting it bounce at 4k? Like maybe at 2k like you said and it makes it up to 2500 before lift off?
