120bhp vs 140 bhp engine difference

a bit concerned about the clutch.. giving me weird noises if I rev too much in first gear before releasing. maybe too much torque for the OEM clutch.

I just posted for the thread opener.. I don't know many cases of upgrades such as mine(if any). those are relatively new engines, there aren't many upgraders ;)

First off, the 150 PS is an updated version of the 140 PS engine. Besides the 10 extra horses, the 150 is also EU6 compliant and replaced the 140 PS version in Europe as of 3/2014. Second, though I cannot tell you for certain what the hardware differences are, I can say that it's not just an ECU upgrade or aftermarket tunes would have been the same. The fact is even after market tunes have different outputs for the engines. It is an old (pre forced induction) and common practice for German automakers to offer the same engine with different outputs, BMW 16i and 18i, 20i and 28i. Mercedes has the 160/180 200/250. They are different engines with different engine codes, which could share 99.99% of components but still not 100%.

Interesting thread. I would expect most cars from the major manufacturers to come with a turbo appropriately sized for the target output level, so would expect the higher output engine to have a larger turbo fitted. Trade off would be it won't spin up so readily at low RPMs but it will sustain more boost at higher RPMs.
The 122 1.4 TSi trails off noticeably above 4000 rpm. If it had a flat torque curve limited only by software it would be able to easily hit 150 bhp (at 5250 rpm), and more at the redline.

IHI Turbo

Hello..

I was reading your input regarding IHI Turbo for 1.4 tsi 122.

I have a Golf 122hp 2014 and have been thinking for some while whether to increase it's turbo size.

Would you be able to tell me the part numbers for this Turbo and was it really a straight swap? Anything to watch out for?

Any help would be appreciated..

Gary :)

If you want to mod a EA211 engine I'd highly recommend to read both
Volkswagen's self-study programmes SSP511 and SSP513 first. ;)

Both the earlier 140 HP (Euro 5) and current 150 HP (Euro 6) versions
have been available with ACT/COD technology and without, although
in some countries only one them has been or is available. Obviously
ACT/COD requires an entirely different cylinder head to shut off two
cylinders.
Second, the difference between both the lower power 122 HP (Euro 5)
and 125 HP (Euro 6), which share nearly the same mechanicals, and the
higher power 140/150 HP version is more expansive than just the turbo.
For example, along with the bigger turbo again the cylinder head, which
comes with dual variable valve timing on both input and exhaust cams,
while the 122/125 HP has variable valve timing on the input camshaft
only. The more advanced valve control helps with spreading torque over
a wide engine speed range thus giving some compensation for the bigger
turbo on the lower end.
You may rest assured that Volkswagen also use some reinforced parts
on 140/150 HP TSIs. Same displacement doesn't mean same hardware.
I would expect the higher powered TSIs to come with stronger pistons
compared to their lesser 122/125 HP brothers, but I didn't ever compare
any part numbers of these engines.
Bear in mind, that on manual gearbox cars also clutch and gearbox are
different. MQ200 6F on the lower power 1.4 TSIs and MQ250 6F on the
stronger ones. You'll guess which is stronger.
However, if you really want to get to know all the part numbers without
leaning on forum talk you first need access to ETKA. There are some non-
official sources . . .
