So I just applied this change to my 2017 Canadian GTI with DAP and a 3/17 build date.

Required a few changes due to the new version of the database, but I found everything. Some settings were already present, and not listed here as this is just from my history from ODB11:

You did enable it through the Settings menu, yes?

snip

Yes, I did double check the settings in the infotainment setup. It seems i had missed holding the check mark long enough on obdeleven for:

09 - Central Electrics – Coding (AFS, FLA, Fernlicht (GLW, MDF) is not supported)
Select: Erweiterte_Fernlichtsteuerung (Advanced High Beam Control)
Change to: AFS, FLA, Fernlicht ueber AFS (default = AFS, FLA, BCM-Fernlicht)

I re did that step today and that did the trick. HBA is now working!

Thanks to @ICmaker for the original post and @KevinC for trying to help me solve the problem between the keyboard and chair!

Does this replicate what the OBD11 app does to save the setting? If so good find.

MY H.B.A. is working, yet on the menu my display does not show light assist option like above? what gives?

From what i've read the menu light assist is a separate change in the OBD11/coding. So if you did the coding maybe you missed a step or if it was working stock maybe its not offered on the menu if the car came from it?

Mine is a 2017 but doesn't have HBA so i'm not 100% sure what is standard.

I'm pretty anal when coding, so I'm positive that I didn't miss a step. Though in the past I've had glitches on the coding even though it was done right, I re-did it and worked. So I'll try that again.

How are you liking the change?

I'm thinking of making the jump with my 2017. Did your 2017 have highbeam assist on already?

Please allow me to introduce myself. I’m a retired electrical engineer with a passion for cars. I was a heavy unit Porsche tech until age 35, when I went back to school and ended up working in Silicon Valley for 25 years. I bought my daughter an M6 2016 R last summer. When my 2010 Corvette began to require too much cash infusion, I sold it and bought my own DSG 2017 R in January.

Here I offer my first contribution to the community - an OBDeleven edit that will unchain your neutered, weak-assed Bi-Xenon Scheinwerferen in about ten minutes. I’ve tested it on my 2017 R and on my daughter’s 2016 in multiple versions and have pages of notes from test drives, pictures of different modes, technology papers from Hella, YouTube videos, etc., but I present the edit here in the simplest form possible to limit confusion and churn.

This is not the only functional configuration, but it’s the best I’ve tested so far. Some of the features it enables: missing AFS beam patterns; adaptive horizontal beam cutoff for same flow and oncoming traffic concurrently; distance beam (Fernlicht) beginning at 55 kph with extended AFS steering response.

I recommend either running the $1.50 OBDeleven app or coding to make auto light control persistent.

happy trails….

I came across this thread looking for something that can improve on my front lighting.

I have a 2017 GTI Sport (5/17 prod date). I was able to the 55 headlight regulation, but I was not able to do the Light Assist (I don't think I have it?) through Central Electronics. I do not have the "coding" option listed under Central Electronics. Will my lights still function properly once I'm driving?

Also, is the All Weather Light the fog lamp? I don't have those so do I still need to enable it?

Thanks!

Improve your front lighting in what way, exactly?

The Sport trim doesn't have any of the sensors required to get the results proposed in this thread

Sure they do - all Sports have xenons, and that's all you need. The only thing we don't get over here is the enhanced version of the lighting, that splits high beams when oncoming traffic is approaching, or when approaching cars from the rear.

I enabled this stuff when the thread first started. VERY noticeable changes to the behavior of the lights.

I thought we need the OEM auto head light sensor or driver's assist to make use of the changes. If not, I'd be interested in giving this a shot.

I know I've changed the headlight restriction out of NAR before this thread was opened, so the supposed result of that is already enabled for me

Edit: okay so rereading the first post, I'm guessing all the lines that mention AFS in the descriptions may still be relevant to the Sport trim.
