Tesla to Build Cars in China

Good post.

Add this.
China will never have to fight us.
All they will have to do is say, "You need to do what we want, or we will stop shipping products to you". No tires, no Walmart, no parts, no electronics.

The war where no shots are fired.

So true. We have gotten spoiled on the lower prices. I admit to climbing in bed with the whores every time I look at a cheap IC on ebay. Or all the other stuff I buy on Whamazon or fleabay. I always think about the remake of The Thomas Crown Affair, when the cop played by Denis Leary says, "Life is full of shitty conflicts".

Receiving help from the US means they shouldn’t produce overseas? Why? What if China offers them tax breaks? What if France does? Are you essentially saying that they shouldn’t expand their business to be more profitable when the opportunity is there? Please remember that Tesla is a publicly traded company, and once a company reaches that status it becomes their fiduciary duty to provide value to shareholders, meaning its their job to make sound business decisions, such as this one.

China produces more cars than the US and Japan combined, yet Tesla should’t be one of those producers, because... ?

China is GM’s (yes, the American company) largest and most profitable market, but according to your logic they should withdraw all of their presence in China because they got tax breaks in the states. Do you see how ridiculous that reasoning is?

Also, if you read the article you would know that they are not stopping manufacturing in the US, they’re building another plant in China to produce for the region. The cars you buy here are still produced here, you will never have to buy a Chinese car in the US if you so choose. You can buy a VW and a BMW made here in the US with substantially reduced import taxes and you have no issue with that, but the same cannot be said for a Chinese consumer to buy a Tesla in the same way. Please see the hypocrisy.

I really would not buy them because they are an ugly design.
Did not read article. Sorry, no time at work.
Yep, they can do what they want.
Just remember this when one day we produce nothing and only have fast food jobs. Once manufacturing skills are lost they will not come back.
Tesla may make money, but I guess only if a country like China forces their workers to help them.

I understand basic economics, in fact, even intermediate economics! Your points are quite good, and true, in general. Nevertheless, Mexico and the USA don't force other countries to hand over all their hard-earned technology, and % of profits that China does. If they did, we'd have heard about it by now.

In matters of Principle, I can't get excited about American companies building factories in a Socialist country. China has to censor their citizens' every move, for fear one of them might stumble across something that would cause them to "ask questions". They are hard at work as we speak, trying to erase their own Communist history of genocide against their own people. "Mao Zedong Mass Murder"...google it.

Now, I am forward-thinking enough to believe it is "possible" that more business interactions, connections, and trade with China may help to overcome political differences, in the longer run. In turn, that may help create a safer world for us all. I'd bet Elon Musk thinks along those lines, too, in addition to the financial aspect. He, Zuckerberg and others are certainly forward-thinkers. I hope they are right, because the stakes are high, and history isn't on their side, particularly with hard-nosed Communist governments.

But the US has been the largest importer of Chinese goods for most of my lifetime, Tesla’s just the very latest to the game.
I was in Shanghai last year and I saw as many Buicks and Fords as any other brand. Americans have been producing cars there forever, nothing’s happening here that hasn’t been happening for decades.

I agree with you on the Chinese government and their despicable history, but I don’t think we necessarily have to agree with their political indoctrinations in order to invest within their country. I don’t agree with sharia law, but I sill think we should engage in trade with the UAE. It’s just good business that will bring in revenue from overseas and at the same time mutually benefit our trading partners. I think this is truly the way to greater peace between previously hostile nations.

Good points. You speak harsh truths. Of course, guys like KimJong not helping current tensions. Is he a Chinese puppet-gone-wild? I dunno. USA traded with Germany and Japan before WWII, but WWII still happened. Still, I agree. We can only go forward from here. Isolationism might solve some things but is bound to create worse problems. USA certainly has to make good decisions and not give away the farm. We need to adapt and compete, or fade away. We also need to win the Cyberwar. China has stolen a boat-load of military tech stuff, and the 'tards in the NSA & CIA let it happen. One could say, "Oh, it's for the best. Keeps the balance of power." Anyway, as always, time will tell. I just don't want it to become a case of:

Pretty much. To me a small part is not the same as buying a car. It’s also not nearly on the scale of what Tesla is doing

Fair enough. Better to be a small whore than a big whore. Hey, I'm guilty, too.

Hmmmmm why not manufacture in China:

1) Rampant theft of intellectual properties
2) No respect for international patents
3) no actual ownership of facilities that you build, can be nationalized at any time
4) Authoritarian gov't that oppresses its own people

other than that it's a great idea
