Hot-V Design

BMW's been using it, now Cadillac. Anyone read up on this to see how they keep the heat away from the top of the engine? Hard to believe the "plastic" engine covers don't melt, and the air filters don't provide excessively hot air to the intakes.

And why are modern 4-cylinder design not V-4's? The packaging opportunities are probably endless, and they sound a lot better.

While that Saab does sound good for a 4 banger, I've been told vibration is the reason you don't see V4's in cars.

I don't think they had balance shafts then. Even inlines shook.

A 90 degree V4 is perfectly balanced, but a 60 degree V4 requires a balance shaft. Ford Europe made a 60 (Cologne V6 minus 2 cylinders), but in the end, the added complexity and cost outweighed the packaging advantages. Ford sold the design to Saab, who used it because it was an improvement over the two-stroke engines they had been using.
