Being that it's a part that should theoretically last the life of the car, ask the dealer of VW will goodwill the entire or part of the repair. Even you calling, and asking for a goodwill can help.

£640 with£100 excess/ £500 with£250 excess. That's for the best one they do. Up to 15000m a year. Might be less if yer cars done less miles already
