That’s going to be a pretty short sidewall, overall diameter will be over 1/2 inch smaller than factory. Being only lowered an inch is going to make the gap look much larger.

^Yup

OEM 19" size is a 235/35-19 on an 8" wide wheel. If you're looking to run a wider tire a 245/35-19 would be more appropriate than the 245/30 tire IMO, but it is slightly larger in diameter. It's less than 1/4" larger compared to a 235/35-19, and would still be within a 3% variation for the speedometer.

More sidewall would be better too

Truth. Plus no tire shop likes mounting a 30 series tire. I've seen many shops that charge more per install based on the series of tire. There are generally less choices for brands and models in that size over a 235/35 or 245/35.

funny thing is that my size is closer to the 225 40 18 thats on the car now. 235 35 19 is 647.1mm dia. 245 30 19 is 629.6mm dia. 225 40 18 is 637.2mm.
so oem r size is almost 10mm bigger. my size is 8mm smaller.
percentage wise my size is closer by about .25%.
not sure why anybody would want a taller tire. i am not looking for comfort, i want performance and i want it NOT to rub.

You're not wrong, even the OEM 19" size is larger than the 225/40-18 size. There are just way more negatives going to a lower series tire such as ride quality, tire selection and cost, potentially installation cost. All the tire sizes being talked about here are "acceptable" but some are more appropriate than others.

If you've got a line on a set of 245/30-19 tires for a great deal, don't let me stop you. They will still work.

I have 245/35 19’s on Rotiform KPS 19” ET45 on my 2017 GTI S. On stock suspension, I had no tire rubbing after doing the fender screw mod in the front, and no tire rubbing in the rear. I have BC Racing BR coilovers on it now, and I do get some rubbing, but only at speed going over bumps and dips. The camber is set at 0, and dampening is set 15 clicks from soft, on a 30 way adjustable dampener. With normal driving though, there is no rubbing. I am going to set my camber at -2 in the front, and am rolling my fenders, and that will easily fix the rubbing. Like I said though, even with the coilovers, it is very very minor rubbbing. Normal driving has no rubbing. Sporty gets some runs here and there over bumps and dips. You should be safe with 245’s on 8.5” wheels ET45. The amount of traction is well worth it, over 235’s.

thanks for the info!!
i may have changed my mind on the 19's and might go 245 35 18 but it's going to be a long winter so i'll have plenty of time to decide for the spring
