^ There's also the reverse gear sensor. The hardest part of the swap is figuring out what's truly different between 5/6 speed. On a MkV 2.5(Same MQ250 as Mk7 Golf) to swap in a GTI/GLI 6 speed(MQ350 like Mk7 GTI) you needed the clutch, flywheel, throw out bearing pressure plate, axles, master to slave cylinder line, slave cylinder, cable mounts(3 of them). The gear selectors were interchangeable, which appears to be true on the Mk7 as well.

Yea, I'm hoping it's just as simple for the mk7 (As far as I can tell it should be the exact same). If it is then my plan is to swap to a 6mt when I need to replace my clutch.

Good news is the fluid is leaking from the input shaft seal based on the leak location when running the car on blocks! We may just replace the input shaft seal and clutch then give it a go.

That's good news! I was a little bit really excited to see a 6mt swap with the 1.8t :p, but I'm glad you might be able to recover your transmission.

Mk1 looks awesome, I'm from up your way originally (Youngstown area), what tracks do you go to up there? Nelsons and Pitt Race are the only two I know of.

Hopefully the 5 speed is ok, it's hard to tell if those pieces are all brass or not. Anything ferrous would be worse news

Hey blade, since I'm sure you've got more knowledge on the subject.
I was in my buddy's 6spd DSG GTI helping him log his JB4. The top of his 3rd was 80s. The top of my 3rd (6spd auto) is 95+. How does the gearing on the 6MT compare to the 5 speed? I'm assuming since the gears are shorter, they will be better for 1/4 times?

The mk7 6mt is super long. 1st and 2nd are actually longer than the 5mt, and 3rd is pretty similar but a few mph shorter. Then 4th 5th and 6th are pretty evenly split up where our 4th and 5th would be.

The other thing is the final drive is different. VW says that the sportwagen final drive in automatics is 3.87:1 for 15-16 and 3.23:1 for 17 up. I have a 16 and it's definitely not 3.87:1. MeltedSolid and I did some calculations and it seems to be the 3.23. I'm a '16. That being said, my third gear will hit 95 if I go to redline. So based on the specs below, I'm scratching my head. The manual cars use a 3.39:1 ratio, but 1-5 gears are numerically lower. First in the auto is 4.46 and the manual is 3.78. the GTI is completely different from that. VW listed specs

Thanks for the awesome info. Now just to see if he does swap transmissions if it helps his 1/4 time. Hes already got one hell of a setup for a stock turbo car.

Good news! I made a trip to the dealer today for parts/pricing and the dealer confirmed axles are interchangeable. The clutch/flywheel/pressure plate are different between the 5 and 6 speed but everything else should be plug and play.

Bad news! I took the car for a short trip after topping off the fluid and everything feels ok, but doesn't at the same time. I think the forum will get its wish to see a 6 speed swap. Costs including aftermarket clutch is only about 2k for a 6 speed swap not including LSD.

What clutch are you going with? Seems very cheap for the swap, almost the same cost as just doing a SB Stage 3 daily clutch alone.

It's that much?! I thought most GTI clutches were in the $1000 - $1300 range with flywheel.

As you go up in tiers the SBC ones get pricey. I want the extra insurance of a Stage 3 Endurance for the inevitable IS38. I also hate the stock clutch feel, a heavier clutch should fix that.

Stock clutch feel is horriable. I ran stg 3 daily on my b5s4 and thatcar made 444/463 awhp on mustang dyno. The pressure plate in stg3 kit isn’t too bad when it comes to pedal pressure. I’ve talked to few people with it on the FB page. They all recommend it

For what it's worth I wouldn't install a SBC in my car if it were free, let alone paying a premium for one. I've personally seen them fail to hold the torque they're rated for on diesel trucks and mk6. Ik neither of those are mk7 but that's enough for me.

Interesting, 1.8T clutches are half as much as 2.0T clutches I had only priced out 1.8T ones. It'll be closer to $2500 then. I'll be running the SBC Stage 3 Endurance 2.0T cost $1750, 1.8 cost $950.

Would be interesting to see if somehow we could get the 1.8 clutch to work on a 2.0. You could do a SRE clutch with a new DMF for roughly $1,000.

Mine was rated for 470tq. My car made close to 600tq at the crank With shit load of antilag awd launches. Hot lapped it at drag stip for maybe 10 passes running 11.1-11.3s and clutch held. Organic disc starts feeling like butter when they heat up but still. Awd running NT05s it held. Gotta keep in mind lots of people install them wrong. You NEED to clean of flywheel from lub before install with a grease remove. “I used thinner” lots of failures are customer errors. Especially when from my experience SB underrates their stuff.

Cool! Were you trying out the mk7 6-speed or something else? The mk7's should be pretty similar until 4th gear, but mk6 and mk5 are WAY shorter.
