Resetting that counter is done manually. It doesn't matter either way though, the dealership won't care, and won't know, as long as you used proper VW502 spec oil, that's all that matters. See the sticky post for the oil list.

Don't get mad at him, as very most Americans never heard of VW 507 00 spec. 
You'd to plug in a computer to tell it it's got fresh oil.
