How are VW's CPO and extended warranties?

I'd love a 2018 GTI with the new longer warranty but I'm not sure I can swing it.

I'm considering a CPO 2016 or 2017 instead but I'm concerned about VW reliability.

Any thoughts on the CPO warranty and maybe even buying an extended warranty?

If you insure through Geico you can get their Mechanical Breakdown Insurance (MBI) for less than $60 per year. There is a $250 deductible, but it’s a very affordable way to protect yourself against major repair costs. I think you could get a great deal on a new 2017 GTI right now, use the longer warranty on the 2018 to bargain down the price on a new 2017.

This sort of scenario makes a pretty good case for a low mileage 2017 CPO instead of a new 2018:

2017 CPO @ 15k miles

Remainder of factory warranty = 2 years/21k

After that ends = 2-year / 24k VW CPO warranty

Total = 4-year, 45k warranty

Not bad especially since you don't take nearly as big a hit on depreciation as a new 2018.

There are high probabilities that a low mileage 2017 CPOed GTI might have been a dealer demo. Make sure you stay away from them.
