Oil Temp Display Accuracy

Curious how accurate the Oil Temp display in the center screen is. Is there actually a dedicated oil temp sensor, or is it just a calculated value based on coolant temps, etc.?

On another note, is there a way to get it to show temperatures below 120°F through coding? Mine is just --- until it gets into the 120's. If there really is an oil temp sensor, and it really can measure down to the degree, why not just have it show the temperature of the oil no matter what it is, not just above 120?

There's a sensor in the sump.

Not sure about the minimum reading. For all purposes below 120 = cold, so VW probably doesn't worry about reading that low.

It actually is accurate, though the sensor wouldn't be accurate enough
below a certain threshold and therefore '----' is displayed for a reason.

Good to know about the sensor.

And I know, I never drive hard unless oil is over 180°F min, 200°F ideally. I just like seeing the actual reading when I turn the car on, and it's annoying that it just shows --- at the beginning. Always get that little worried feeling that the sensor failed or something lol

Your coolant will always reach operating temperature vs your oil temperature. It's normal for the gauge to read --- until about 130F

Related to this topic... do our cars come with a factory oil cooler?

Or is the "cooling" handled by the larger oil capacity (6 quarts vs. the usual 4.5 quarts for 4-cyl engines), allowing for a larger heat capacity?

@ evilminion:

It's way better to display '----' than an inaccurate number. ;)

Yes, however it's actually a coolant/oil heat exchanger with the benefit
of not just cooling the oil when the engine is hot, but also warming the oil
after cold starts, since coolant temp uses to raises quicker than oil temp.

It's a well proven design that VW (and many others) are using for decades.

Is it a donut oil cooler between the block and oil filter or is it integrated into the radiator?

I'm familiar with the design as my S uses a coolant/oil donut heat exchanger
in between the block and the oil filter for cooling/warming the oil.

Thank you for clearing that up... makes me happy to hear that.
