I couldn't find anything on this subject so thought id have a look into it myself. I didnt fancy paying VW retrofit prices as I dont need it that much, but thought if I could do it for say less than £50 then it'd be worth it.

So today I completed the installation. Yes its not perfect by all means, but it works and does its job. Total bill was about £47. So in comparison to the VW official parts and then either fitting yourself or paying someone else to do it. I dont think its too bad.

If people are interested ill upload pictures and more info on how I done it and what I used.

Yes I will link the things I bought. It was a simple plug and play job if youre familiar with stuff like that to be fair.

The connects2 lead can be purchased from halfords, if you go in and quote them the part number they should be able to find it and supply it. Pretty sure it was £32.99. Haven't looked anywhere else for the lead. Probably can also be purchased online.

Then the only other thing you need is the reverse camera.

I have a golf r so unfortunately for me I have led number plate lights from the factory, as I first ordered a reverse camera that fits in the number plate light hole. For me this wouldnt work as it needed a bulb in it to light up. That's why I had to go with the camera I did. Because of this the installation isnt quite perfect as I mentioned but does the job and for the price it seems worth it.

(Edit)
You will also need VCDS to code the rear view camera option in.

Here are some pictures I got along the way. As you can see the wire has to go into the number plate light, I didn't fancy drilling a big hole in the bumper, and even if I did I didn't have a grommet to hand to fill it after so this was the only way I could find to getting it fitted. this is also why the camera is mounted off centre too as I didn't want too much wire hanging out either.

Hardest part was trying to get all the wires and stereo back!!

Good stuff! I had no idea there were R's without OEM backup cameras.

Hello.

I haven't got any pictures of the display. Will get one tomorrow and post it Quality isn't mega good, but clear enough to see what you need too. (Take into account how much this costs in comparison to the vw kit)
You can also buy whatever camera you want. Mine was £12. You can buy a better quality one.

As far as the wires go. You install the connects2 lead behind the stereo and it has a video in which comes from the camera. Only other wires you need are a live (when in reverse) and a ground. The connects2 lead has a wire coming off it which goes live when You go into reverse (it works with the canbus system, so no tapping into reverse light wires) so you tap the live from the camera into that one. Then just ground it out on some metal.

If you don't have led number plate lights then you could order this camera, which saves screwing the camera onto the bumper and makes it a bit more of a clean install. Only downside is the camera isn't centred. Mine isn't centred and isn't bothering me too much. I only use the display to see how far I am from something behind me and to see what's there, rather if I'm straight or not.

Number plate camera.

Hope this helps a bit more. Anything else, just ask

If you have vcds coding is very easy. Not sure if it can be done via the app that other use (can't remember what it's called) if you don't have vcds, get on the vcds users page on Facebook and there's a map of where users are, find someone local to you and ask them to do it. It will literally take less than 5 minutes.

Thanks very much!

Images of camera quality!

As mentioned, it's not mega brilliant. But does the job. I may upgrade the camera in the future if I can find a better quality one. Didn't want to spend loads on a camera incase it didn't work!

Hi there mate,
hows the reverse camera going on? any updates? did you upgrade?

thanks

Hey, have replied to your message.

But yeah all going okay, no problems really at all. Havent upgraded the camera yet as im yet to find anything that is much better quality. Have found some cameras on Ali express  that fit in the number plate hole rather than have the wiring nipping up there so tempted to try one of them, but im always cautious of Ali express stuff haha. For me it completely does the job, and for around £40 and an hour or two of my time I cannot complain at all really.
