Quick update:
I wanted a 997 Turbo but it proved hard to buy a good one in budget, so I ordered an RS3 and patiently waited for 2 long months in a 100% pedestrian back-to-stock GTI, a terrible period of my life!
Then ~1.5 months back Audi announced the US curb weight of the RS3... 3,593lbs... in its base form! Mine had every option ticked. 300lbs-400lbs heavier than a Golf R, and ~700lbs heavier than the lighter-than-stock GTI I had put together.
Disappointed at the terrible power-to-weight ratio, i figured the 400hp 354lbs-ft would be significantly slower than a rolling FBO GTI. The impressive 3.9s 0-60 Audi quotes has to be a product of fantastic OEM launch control, which is useless to me. Given just a 1-ft rollout I would be surprised if the RS3 is much quicker than a stage 1 Golf R/S3, spec'd up at ~$68.5k + tax, for my usecase the RS3 no longer made sense.
The same day I cancelled my order; however, fate would have it my Audi dealer had just taken in a pristine 2015 GTR against a 2017 R8 v10. I left Audi with a Godzilla... I took it too the track the same week, and can confirm it truly is a beast in a different league!!!
