It's been a while since it was cold in North Texas. During the last cold spell when it was about 20F ambient I couldn't take IAT measurements below 32F. Is this an ECU or sensor limitation?

Question for you guys that have upgraded the intercooler: do you see lower IAT temps on daily driving? The logs show me a great amount of info for third gear pulls, but how about everyday stop and go? Here I constantly see 10-20-30 degrees above ambient in daily traffic because of the normally high ambient temps outside.

IATs in normal driving are somewhat cooler but not a lot. Higher IAT's in low boost driving conditions are not something to worry about. It's the high IAT's while at 20+ PSI and WOT that's not good for your motor and turbo.

The goal of an upgraded intercooler is to prevent heat soak. IATs drop instantly once you step on it and allow air flow through the IC.

Ok, as promised, just finished install of Uni.
Here are two logs, runs were back to back 20-30 seconds apart (enough for me to turn up boost 1psi on second run).

Run 1, JB4 MAP 6 6.0 Peak DP IC 94OCT AMBIENT 7*C/45*F
http://www.datazap.me/u/wy2sl0/jb4-60-dp-ic-94oct-ambient-7c45f?log=0&data=1-6

Run 2, JB4 MAP 6 7.0 Peak DP IC 94OCT AMBIENT 7*C/45*F
http://www.datazap.me/u/wy2sl0/jb4-70-dp-ic-94oct-ambient-7c45f-run-2?log=0&data=1-4

Cliffs: less than 10*F above ambient in back to back pulls, around 3-5*C.

Looks like we going to be jumping in on this. We have had good success with a core we sourced for our BMW N54 customers. VW is next.

Get r done. Very interested if the price is right.

Separated vehicles between IS20 and IS38. Added unitronic and Neuspeed. (Can always see most updated one by going to the link in the bottom of my sig)

Finally getting some awesome Data! Different cars, mainly looking at the curve of the IAT's vs engine speed. (To see if the intercooler is maintaining temps, or spiking up)

I've got the VWR unit. I'll grab some data and post it here. Is there a particular method or are there particular conditions you'd like to see?

I will say I've been watching IAT under regular granny driving. Just two or three pounds of boost will bring IAT down from 30+ degrees above ambient to within 5 or 10 degrees above.

How are you liking the VWR IC?! I keep eyeballing it but haven't heard much about it...I'm really liking that it's a bar and plate design...fitment issues? [emoji106]

Scrodee,

Sounds good. Any data you can provide is awesome. One thing I'd like to see is more sustained runs...which is reallllly hard to do. Something like the wagner or Neuspeed pulls. Lets us see how the IC handles the charge over time, and how well it sheds the heat. So if you could look for a period of time, vs just one pull, that would be awesome.

I should be at the track in the next few weeks and will make sure to log the full 1/4 (end up slightly into 4th).

It's a beautiful piece, the quality is top notch. It's a shame it gets hidden when installed. No fitment issues.
I've not run the car really hard yet as I'm breaking in the new clutch. I have been watching IAT on my commute; the temps drop very rapidly under boost. Sitting at idle in traffic the temps will get up to 30-40+ degrees above ambient, only a second or two after I get into a few pounds of boost the temps drop to within 10 degrees of ambient. I don't have any observations on high boost situations yet but I will post logs and thoughts as soon as I feel comfortable giving the clutch all the beans.

@Norsk : Not worth it if you never push the car hard enough. IC is for people going to the drag strip or on the track. If you just DD and rarely push her than you should be more than fine with the stock IC.

The GTI is my DD and I have the JB4 and I really only use it for spirited driving on occasion. Once I get the rims and tires and drop in the suspension that may change and she might turn into a weekend track car once every other month in which case, IC is the next purchase.

there is no need for an IC, but to maximize performance you will want one. The IAT's don't tell the full story.
