So, I pulled the plugs at roughly 2300 miles. I found that the carbon buildup directly follows the frequency of misfire counts, so #4 most misfire, followed by #1, #3, and almost none for #2. Plugs were all right around .030 gap.

I installed RS7 NGK's at the out of box gap of .025 - .026 and immediately got big misfire counts on #4, much worse than on the stock plugs, You could definitely feel it missing at idle.

Pulled out the RS7 plugs, re-gaped the stock plugs to .028 and re-installed. Swapped coil packs around, traded 1 and 2 as well as 3 and 4. Previously I swapped 1 and 4. This seemed to calm things down and reduce the overall occurrence of misfire counts.

I have a set of RS3 coilpacks and a fresh set of stock plugs showing up today. I am going to test .032 gap on stock plugs and coils to see if that makes things better or worse.

Once I find the best gap on the stock coils and plugs, if there really is one, I'm going to gap the new plugs and throw them in with the RS3 coilpacks.

pisses me off the VW just dismisses these issues. Some people have legit lemmon law cases because they are going to have a difficult, if not impossible, time passing emissions. In cali we have 6 years from purchase so not a big deal for me but still......

Got my first CEL almost two months into ownership. ~ 2160 Miles. Diagnosed as a misfire. Odd that this is happening to 2017's but doesn't seem to be prevalent with older ones. Software change?

Yours look the same to me, maybe its just the photo or i don't know what i'm supposed to be looking for  Sorry, my handiness with the car stops at the engine bay.. I'm fine with cosmetic, polishing, removing panels etc, but not actual engine stuff.

If your RS3 parts make a difference i will definitely look into that. Please post back your results :)

I know that the R8 coil packs use to be popular fix, has anyone tried them on the MK7 yet?

Quick update:

Tried stock NGK's gapped at .032 with the RS3 CoilPacks, counts were a little bit worse than stock coils at .030, or about the same, hard to tell.

I put in the fresh plugs gapped at .028 with the RS3 coils. It's the best I have logged so far. Counts seem more evenly distributed and don't tend to go much over 10 after a full drive cycle.

I'm done chasing this unless I get another CEL. For those having chronic CEL's you can try gaping the stock plugs down to .028, as that seemed to make more difference than anything else.

So just to be clear you settled on the RS3 coilpacks and RS3 sparkplugs at a gap of 0.028? If you don't get a CEL i'll switch to those :)

RS3 coilpacks and stock golf R ngk plugs at .028.

I would not spend the money on the RS3 coilpacks, just try .028 gap on stock plugs. I had hoped the RS3 coils would allow a larger gap but didn't seem to help as much as the slightly reduced gap.

I have a 2017 R and just got a check engine light for misfires. Mods: intake. No engine tuning or exhaust mods. The misfires are happening at low speed after being parked and starting up.

Do people on a tune have the same problem? I'm wondering whether going to stage 1 or 2 APR might solve the issue?

2017 R with a APR Stage 1 tune.....7,000 miles.

NO PROBLEMO!!!!

I BEAT Corvettes....392 Hemis...and 5.0 Mustangs......

My car had misfires and went into limp today. I pulled over. Cut it off and back on. EPC turned off but check engine stayed. Took it to VW. They told me all cylinders misfired randomly. They said there was a software update so they did the update and sent me on my way.

I went to my local shop to get reflashed with my stage 1 tune and he said VW changed the box code. I'm now awaiting the new software from APR =/

I still dont know why my car randomly is stumbling and misfiring after nearly 19k trouble free miles. Im gonna order some new plugs. Maybe mine just fouled up.

Had this today. Stock 2017. Dealer said there was a TSB and did a software update. Fixed for now.

EDIT - I at 6,400 miles

Hope it sticks for you, i posted on vortex as this thread is kinda dead, but mine came back after a month and half, so for me (and another guy on there) this update didn't fix the issue.

At least my idle/startup isn't anywhere near as rough, so its not for nothing. Just disappointed it didn't fix the issue completely. :(
