Driving since '73, here's my list...

'69 Beetle
'69 Datsun 510
'70 Beetle
'73 Datsun 240Z (bought from my boss at age 18, financed w/o a cosigner - that was cool)
'77 Datsun L'il Hustler pickup (1st vehicle bought new)
'78 Datsun 280Z
'80 Honda Accord LX (4-month wait, 10% dealer markup, non-negotiable)
'83 Rabbit GTI (November '82 - one of the first to hit the ground in California)
'85 GTI (was neither called Rabbit nor Golf at this point on our shores - just "GTI")
'88 Acura Integra LX Special Edition
'93 Nissan Sentra SE-R (Car & Driver 10Best for all 4 years of production - and rightly so)
'93 Nissan 300ZX
'97 GTI VR6 (first VW in a decade, after awful dealership experiences in the '80s drove me away)
'86.5 Scirocco 16V (kept it 10 years, was featured in european car in 2005)
'99 GTI GLX (silly name, silly car - wood trim in a GTI, really??)
'00 Passat 1.8T 6MT (great car, would have kept it longer had it not gotten T-boned)
'02 GTI 337 Edition (oh those awesome Recaros, and BBS RC's as standard equipment)
'04 Golf .:R32 (oh those awful Konig seats - excruciatingly uncomfortable for me)
'06 BMW 330i
'07 BMW Z4M coupé (kept it 8 years, never should have sold it)
'10 Mini Cooper S
'05 BMW 330Ci ZHP coupé (still owned, incredible car)
'02 BMW E39 M5 (essentially swapped my Z4MC for it - never could fall in love with it)
'16 Golf R

44 years worth of cars, and not a single automatic on that entire list. Someday I'll own one, I don't hate them - just prefer to row my own whenever possible.

Jiminy Cricket!! I'm blown away by how much iron some of you guys have gone thru! This is a fascinating thread. GTI Jake, you are ahead of the curve at only 26. Glad to see lots of older guys here too (I prefer to say "Experienced"...like the Hendix song) :)

Missed out my comments on my previous cars - what a great idea!

98 VW Polo - nice first car, horrible fuel economy for a 1.6 and non-stop problems - it was at the mechanics almost every week. Was glad to see the end of it.

96 BMW e39 528i - fell in love with this tank, did a heap of my own work on it. Very high kms, so cooling system and AC started giving up - got rid of it.

03 BMW e46 320ci m-sport - excellent fuel economy, brilliant handling and was as a 2003 it had the end of line kit including LED tailights, and DSC. It was pretty quick - but not quick enough. Only had for about a year - had a killer sound system fitted.

02 BMW e46 325ci m-sport - 2.5l engine was perfect. Not too thirsty, but great for the chassis giving awesome handling and feel. 5 speed auto struggled on the open road a bit as it couldn't decide between 4th and 5th. Unique colour for the NZ market and was full leather with cruise. Had the sound system from the '03 transferred over. I really loved this car and was very proud of it. Sold because I got a company car.

07 BMW e87 130i m-sport - before the GTI this was the best car I've owned. The 3L I6 was insane, brilliant handling and paired with the 6 speed this thing hissed. It was slightly modded when I bought it so had a meaty exhaust upgrade. Slightly impractical with its tiny boot and rear. Sold because we got given a Mazda3 for about a year.

How many of the members here have never owned a "performance" car before? Here's a simple poll just out of curiosity. I think it's great how many people have been drawn into becoming a car enthusiast with this platform, the more the better!

If you never owned a performance car and now you have a GTI then you have never owned a performance car!

Came from Subarus... first car was a 2003 Impreza 2.5RS. Slow as all hell but with a bunch of aftermarket WRX suspension work made it a riot.

Then came my old 2004 WRX. Had that for over 6 years and sold it just before 190k miles to make way for the GTI.
