Downpipe Cabin Noise

Thinking about a 200 cell catted downpipe with stock exhaust setup for a bit more noise and power - BCS my current fav (had cat-back on previous car).

What’s the cabin noise like when driving normally? Is there any drone?

I don’t want to deafen passengers (my wife)!

I’d like to think that the stock exhaust means that drone is kept to a minimum but would like to hear some experience! From the outside, I think a downpipe / stock setup sounds ace!

With stock exhaust, no problem.

If you go with a muffler or res delete (or axle back) in addition to the DP, it gets pretty loud. If you do that, replace the resonator with the Vibrant 17930 from Jake's thread and you'll be golden.

edit: fuckin' Diggs is everywhere.... goddamned ninja.

Yep its pretty normal. Mine has good bite to it but its very tame. If i lay the seats down you can hear a good deal more of it

It's louder than stock but not annoying. Builds from 2500 to 3500 rpm and pretty much levels out on mine. I don't approach 2500rpm in 6th at legal speeds, so no drone on the hwy. Lots of hills though and you'd get some.

I got the Uni downpipe with the stock catback and sounds pretty awesome.

Before the variable valve change, it basically sounds stock.

It does have a bit of drone around 3000rpm and then dies down.
Growing up, I personally like the stealthier approach until “ gettin’ on it “

Any experience with the CTS catless? I ran a billyboat catted on my mk5, and it was perfect. No drone and sounded brilliant after getting on it.

You will be fine most of the time but expect:

A bit of bass as you decelerate to a stop if DSG.
You will have a bit of drone under load (uphill) at freeway speeds.

Overall it is fine if you are IS20, the IS38 will increase drone.

I believe that DPs with cats further away from the turbo will be a little louder than those with cats in the OE location.

AWE catted/resonated DP

No drone even with soundaktor 100%

70 mile commute daily with 60-70 mph with 2500-3000 rpm entire way

Im about to put the Unitronic DP on my car- basically stock

how is the noise level? much more or manageable?

would you put a resonator like the vibrant on?

* Also* what kind of gains did you get?

Having this DP, I'd be lying if I didn't say that there isn't any drone. There's a bit of a ''buzz'' around 3000rpm and up and then it dies down.
This is with the stock exhaust and the Soundator disabled.

Exact gains are hard to say, most high flowing DP will yield around the same gains. My guess is the Uni DP (being catted) gains 15-20whp. But this is only a guess since I did not dyno before and after the car.
