Not sure about anyone else, but I have a noise in my rear suspension that just started within the last 500 km. Mine is a '16 GTI PP with DCC and 25,000km. Will take it to the dealer in the new year to get it checked out.
Well my noise is a swaybar link. I have an ST rear bar with stocks endlinks and one of them pulled out. Dealer says it is the first one they have seen do that.

So my car is booked into the dealer's tomorrow for the 90,000 km service. I've told them the rear suspension needs looking at. I've told them it's a common problem, but "we've never heard of anyone having any issues". If I quote the "TPI 2034188/2", is that an internal VW service number or something?

Anyways, wish me luck. Any tips and advice greatly received, I'll let you know how I go.

I'm getting the same noise that everyone reports on this thread from my 2013 GT TDI estate. Seeing as it's well out of warranty (88,000m) I'm happy to replace myself with the Bilstein B4 shocks - Does anyone know if there is a special one for the estate? or is it the same as the saloon. Also can anyone recommend a supplier in the Uk to get them from please?

Do you get an answer? Is it the same shock as the sedan?

(The suspension is identical between the golf hatch and estate models.)

...if it creaks, it's probably made by VAG

I have a 2014 Golf 7 1.2 Sportsvan and having rear suspension noise when hitting speedbumps.

I’m wondering that there are people around here or maybe do you know somebody that has a Golf 7 Sportsvan and using Bilstein B4 to solve the rear suspension noise for a long time. I would be very grateful to let me or us know about your experience.

I did read on a German Golf 7 forum that there two persons that placed Bilstein B6 under there Golf 7 Sportsvan that solved the rear suspension noise problem temporarily. Has this maybe to do that the Bilstein B4 are softer then Bilstein B6? https://www.motor-talk.de/forum/bilstein-b6-oder-b8-fuer-sportsvan-t6111060.html?page=1

You can use web browser language translator option to read the German forum in English.

Update: Have my GTI booked in to the dealer for 28 February to diagnose this. Although I'm fairly certain that, even with DCC, the issue is the rear shocks (they're Monroe, btw), and I intend to point them in that direction, I fully expect the dealer to come back with "that's the design" or something similar. Will update here as I learn more. Stay tuned!

The Monroe shocks are used on Audi. A helpful local vag specialist who advised me while I was having warranty issues with the rear shocks said the Monroe ones have been trouble previously on the Audi a4s!

This does not surprise me. Monroe are generally not known for their superb quality. This is obviously an area where VAG has cut a corner or two.

I did get my car back from the dealer after the service visit to address this issue. Apologies for not posting back sooner...

The dealer tech claimed he could not hear the noise. I took him for a ride and pointed it out to him. After a phone call with their tech support line, the dealership's ultimate solution was to order a single shock, replace it, and "go from there." They stated they would call me when the part arrived to schedule the replacement work. To this point, I have not received that phone call, and that was almost 2 months ago. No, I haven't called them about it, and I'm not going to, because....

After reading all the posts on the subject (on here and other boards), I'm hesitant to let them work on it any further, especially not to replace just a single shock with the same part that will eventually start making the noises again. The suspension is working properly, save for the horrible noises that occasionally come from the rear end. When I have the time/funds, I plan to replace the rears with Bilstein B6 DampTronics and be done with it. At that point, I will post back here stating whether or not the Bilsteins resolved the problem on my DCC car.

Update : 12k miles and the later revised shocks are now knocking and noisy again. Had enough with this shed now so I'll be getting shot some time soon

the car has been in for it's service at 115,000 kms. Still no joy over with the rear damper noise. The dealer says they can only replace them under warranty if they are leaking. they have never heard of the noisy rear damper issue, no one else has complained and they can't find anything wrong with the car.

I've been to the Bilstein Australia website, and they don't list dampers for the Golf. Frustrating.

I strapped my iPhone to the car and filmed the dampers working as I drove around the block. - interesting, but no noise detectable over the wind. I think it’s related to the rapid fluctuation of the shock over rougher surfaces transmitting through to the car, not the shock itself producing a knocking sound.

VW Customer cares latest advice is to take the car to another dealer for a second opinion, after the first said they can only change then if they are leaking

I have a creaking sound from the rear (somewhere in underbody) problem when stopping. I’m trying to figure out if it’s the same problem. I have not read anyone describing/replicating the problem like me so I wanted to ask. I’m dreading to go to the dealership, I want to do some homework before going.

I have a 2018 GTI SE mk7.5 with PP, USA version (if it makes any difference) with only 3500 miles on it.

The creaks happen when the car is coming to a stop and the weight shifts back to neutral position. Like any car when you apply brakes weight shifts forward towards the front wheel, then you come to a full stop it shifts back. (I’m not a mechanic but when it shifts back I am guessing shocks or suspension absorbs the movement do the car does not rock back and fort.)

There’s no brake noise whatsoever when I apply the brakes. There’s a creaking noise when the weight shifts back to neutral and rear.

This happens when the car is cold, not sure if it’s the brake or engine/fluid coldness, especially in the morning. When the car/brakes get warm the creaking is gone or unnoticeable. But I can still produce some creaking by releasing the brake a little and reapplying it, rocking the car hard. It is not normal to do that, I know, that’s not something I do normally while driving. The sound is mostly a creaking sound more than a clunky sound. I have to apply brakes really gently in the morning when coming to a stop to avoid this sound, which is annoying. It’s been getting better slowly as the car settles in but at 3500 miles it is still there.

In addition to that I hear similar suspension clunking noise people post hear when going over speed bumps, but that’s something I am kinda ok with. I don’t hear it when driving over rough roads.

I hope I described it clear enough. Does anyone experience the same here?
