You’re allowed to pass in the middle lane if you’re in traffic, but what speed classes as “in traffic” is a bit of a grey area. You certainly can’t fly past in the middle lane at 100 when everyone else is at normal speeds...

As with all these things, you do need to apply a little human brain to the smartness of the technology!
