Proposed Diesel changes?

Can anyone please shed some light on the latest government Diesel car proposals?
The newspaper articles I've read online have conflicting information regarding the date post 2005 being more unfriendly than pre 2005! They mention scrapping newer vehicles and additional London parking charges.
I purchased my Mk7 1.6 TDI Bluemotion in 2014 due to its low environmental pollutants which allowed free road fund license (always a bonus).
Have I been sucked into something or again someone has voted for the wrong party..
I don't want to run twin 40DCOE again I just can't afford it. LOL.

I think that the main trigger point is whether a diesel is Euro 6 emissions compliant. Euro 6 emissions standard became mandatory for manufacturers in 2015, although I think some manufacturers' Diesel engines were Euro 6 compliant before 2015. Any diesel engined car that is Euro 5 or earlier is likely to be affected by the Government proposals.

There does seem to be lots of conflicting information at present, but from what I've read, the likely impacts are;

- the introduction of a daily diesel congestion charge in areas that are designated as Clean Air Zones - not clear whether or not this will apply to cars or just commercial vehicles and public transport vehicles; maybe it will for the local authority concerned to decide.
- a selective scrappage scheme to encourage owners of older, more polluting diesel (and petrol) cars to switch to newer cleaner cars, which I think means electric cars.

I wouldn't be surprised to see increased VED for diesel cars either, although VED changes would probably only apply to new diesel registrations, to discourage individuals from purchasing new diesel cars.

I bought my current car last year; my first VW petrol engined car for 14 years after having driven VW diesels 2002-2016. In the light of dieselgate and some of the early murmurings of likely changes in attitude towards diesel, and the fact that I was now only doing a low annual mileage, I decided it was the right time to switch back to petrol.

At present there's lot's of "noise" and speculation but no action... As SRGTD said if you have a Euro 5 (your car) or earlier diesel car then expect at some point to be banned from some major city centres, but not all. I doubt they'll change the current VED rates for existing cars but for new cars it could change in the future as technology changes.

Bear in mind that, despite the almost total concentration by the Press on diesel, it doesn't just affect them but affects petrol cars as well...

One of the proposals is some sort or "real time" monitoring of exhaust emissions at the roadside and that would affect petrols as much as diesels as anyone with a badly maintained or modified engine would be caught as well...

I'd say for the next few years if you have a Euro 6 diesel Golf (one with Ad Blue I believe) you shouldn't be affected by the proposed inner city zones... Which it is worth noting aren't done by the National Government but by the Local ones, so if you got a Green Mayor, for instance, they could ban ALL i/c cars!!

I don't think there are Euro 6 Golf diesels with Selective Catalytic Reduction (AdBlue) in the UK at the moment.

Passats yes.

Must be due soon, then. I am due to change car in November and from what I understand having spoken to them diesels will only be Euro 6 compliant with AB...

This was exactly my thought process when deciding what my next car was going to be.

In April I ordered an audi A3 with a petrol engine. (I really cant live with the lower front valance on the FL golf) Ive gone with the new 1.5TSI which apparently has the same low end torque of a diesel engine with none of the nasty NoX

I'm taking a "wait and see" attitude at the moment. There's lots of speculation around with NO facts... I'd rather not have to pay several hundred pounds a year extra on fuel...

If they banned older diesels as the papers have suggested then there will be millions of drivers around with no way of getting into their work.

Something will happen, but I can't see much in the short term (next few years) except in London centre which has the infrastructure already in place, though that doesn't affect most of us.

Playing catch up as my 1.4 140PS has the same low end torque....

& PS the correct info about NOX/ particulate matter etc was known about & reported in the press back in 1994 when I bought my first car..Just everyone fell for the gov. focusing on the CO2 so everyone decided to buy diesel..

not me petrol all the way with small high revving engines, top end clean burning fuels & well looked after...& my MOT emissions tests prove it too.

Mind you I do less than 20,000miles a year...
