I recently purchased a GTD with 19 inch wheels and 225x35 tyres . Love the car but where we live we have loads of potholes and already have knackered a tyre . Can I fit smaller diameter wheels with bigger tyres ie 17 inch or even 16 inch ? the rim is 7.5j x19 et 51 , 5x112 , any advice would be appreciated

There are calculators on line, I think TireRack has one, that will tell you what size tire and rim will be equal to what you have.

Watch the ET offset when changing unless you are going with OEM VW rims.

I think we shouldn't make things too complicated by swamping him with
aftermarket stuff. He didn't even ask for that. Don't you realize Andrew is
already overchallenged? Let's keep it simple. ;)

Andrew, any OE (Original Volkswagen) wheel intended for use on the Mk.7
from 16" on will fit your GTD. I'd recommend staying with a stock tyre size like
205/55 R16 or 225/45 R17. Any of these will ride noticeably better than your
current 19" wheels. Personally I think 225/45 R17 is the ideal compromise bet-
ween looks, handling and ride comfort. In that size you also have plenty of
choice between either comfort (touring) or performance (UHP) oriented tyres.
Two examples: The Michelin Primacy 3 is a touring tyre, while the Michelin PS4
is an UHP tyre. Choose depending on your preferences.
The OE wheel size intended for use along with 225/45 R17 is 7.5Jx17 ET49 as
that's what's standard on the GTD on several European markets, where both
18" and 19" wheels are optional, costing an extra fee.

Hope this helps. ;)
