You mentioned it already.....you need to have the right size jack. The 1.5 ton from HB works great up front (if you remove the side handle).
Even with the small jack I have to angle the jack stand in the rear so its not perpendicular with the pinch weld but works ok.

Gona try these jack stands....think this will be the perfect combo with my jack.

Good idea removing the side handles. I have similar handles on mine. I have the Jegs aluminum jack. Had to get one with a high lift height because my truck has extended travel suspension and it takes a LOT to get the tires off the ground haha. :D

While it (usually) works, that jack is complete garbage

You guys worried about safety here...that jack would lift up but slowly release while trying to place the jack stands. The little swivel wheels are sketchy too.
I ditched it ASAP and bought the bigger/heavier low profile 3 ton jack for the garage instead.

For a spare tire change or a jack for in your car (since it's light)....POSSIBLY, but that's all it's good for.
I would NOT be using that in my garage to lift the car though

No issues with mine ...but I never keep the car on the jack for that long. I always put the jackstand under right away. If yours won't hold long enough to fetch and place jackstand then something is wrong with your jack.

Is there a good front and rear jack point? For example, I jack up my truck from the rear diff so both rear wheels leave the ground at the same time and then I stick two jack stands under the frame. Then I jack up the front from the cross member and do the same thing. Keeps the whole thing balanced. How would you accomplish that on the Golf?

Also, what jack stands do you guys use once you have the car in the air? I have some that use the shallow U shape design but I've always hated them.

Those are nice, lightweight stands.

Perfect for taking to the track to support the car for a suspension setup or tire change.
But I would never use them while I'm under the car. That 7" diameter base is too small to be safe for that.

My 6-ton stands have a 9.5" x 10.5" base and look like this:

Their wide stance makes them very stable.

Neil;

When I work on my VW at the house I always use the ECS Tuning Jack Stands and I also use 2 of the Aluminum Floor Jacks as a backup for safety.

I have those big jack stands but they chipped my concrete. Now that I use the ECS Tuning Jack Stands the concrete stays nice.

Use a piece of plywood under the stands Neil stated. No more chips[emoji106]

FYI I bit the bullet and ordered these two over Black Friday based on this post. Both are of quality, although I was somewhat bummed the stands were made in China.

That being said they've changed my opinion on the jackpads, with the smaller footprint of the Schwaben stands I can finally use a stand when lifting the car using the jackpads. Life changing.
Over the weekend I removed my APR DP on my GTI, and the extra clearance vs my Rhino ramps made the job far easier.

I'm looking to get a 2018 Golf R, and will be sure to install a set of the ECS jack pads on it. However I'd like to buy the OE ROW under panels, instead of drilling holes into the NA version.
