Sorry, should have included them in the original post. Here ya go.

Torch light here.. ECS is pretty expensive, might be able to get a better deal from your local dealer, and avoid shipping charge too. Or buy something like an oil change kit and push your order over the free shipping threshold...

Here's the tray. Note that this one fits the R only - won't fit the GTI or Golf consoles. Cheap and shipping from China was fast...

Not affiliated with the product or its vendor -- has anyone tried the ECS (https://www.ecstuning.com/b-ecs-parts/mk7-golf-r-center-console-access-kit/021096ecs01~a/) option?

I got the ECS kit - and yes, make certain your hex wrench is properly seated so as to avoid stripping the bolts - they are pretty tightly seated.
I don't really miss the ratcheting - and the lid requires a bit of effort to raise/lower. I'll take any added storage I can get; though on the small side, I'm still able to get a bunch of useful things in there. Well worth the 10 minutes it took.

My Sig Sauer .380 fits nicely. ECS kit is expensive, but fit and finish on the two plastic wedges was flawless and worked perfectly. Install couldn't have been easier.

Personally I used the tape/sticker from command strips to keep the arms up, should hold for a while. I did order the ratcheting one though since I use the center console a good amount.

Ive had double sided foam tape holding mine up since September 2015 no issues yet. I also stripped on screw. Used a dremel cutting wheel to slot it, then went at it with a wide flathead.

I can count on 1 finger the number of times I used the center console on my MK6 Golf.

Yes but if it was available I'd use it. Just did the mod and it wasn't too bad (tie-wrap method). If it was something that involved taking the interior of the car apart then definitely not.

i had originally though that this issue would carry over to the GTI.. I was pleasantly surprised when i first attempted to lift the arm rest and it opened with no issue :)
