What oil do you run?

As a hint:

Contrary to popular believe VW 504 00 is a much stricter spec than VW 502 00.
I'd highly prefer 504 00 over 502 00 (which is two decades old). That does not
mean that all oils meeting just VW 502 00 spec are worse.

On a side note: VW 507 00, which someone mentioned above, is for VW Diesel
engines with extended intervals (as is 504 00 for gasoline) and particle filter.
However, any oil meeting 504 00 I'm aware of at the same time also meets 507
00 and vice versa. Sadly Diesel particle filters don't allow for huge contains of
anti-wear and friction modifier additives, so we have to live with limited amounts
of them. Despite that VW 504 00/507 00 has the highest requirements regarding
wear on the entire market. If an oil meets this spec it cannot be bad.

Lots of info on Bitog!

Can the 507 oil worst case scenario last up until 18k? Or is it advisable to change it earlier no matter what?

Any oil that meets VW 502, Porsche A40, and MB 229.5 is going to perform above average in your mass produced 1986cc engine.

ECS's LM Leichtlauf 5w-40 is the best bang/buck kit out there I think, and the oil is a sure fire winner among VW/AUDI aficionados.

I was also interested in Pennzoil/Shell Platinum Euro 5w-40, but its more expensive and more of a hassle to get.

Up to 30.000 km and two years officially on LL cars (extended interval, which applies to
any Euro spec VW/Audi), and depending on conditions.
But yes, I would strongly recommend changing it every year/15.000 km or even earlier.

Btw, VW 504 00 includes 502 00 spec. ;)

Nice, judging by how cheap it is to change the oil and filter I can't fathom why some never change it frequently! It's literally cheap fast and promises peace of mind.

Speaking of oil changes, the filter on my Mk7 TDI (ea288) is on the bottom of the engine, and I have to unplug a coolant sensor and move a wiring harness out of the way.

This is some bullshxt, VW. First of five VWs I've had that has a bottom filter.

I'm running the diesel spec of course. VW 507. Castrol LL3

Just wanted to throw this out there because I haven't seen anyone list it, but anyone try out Redline performance 5W-40 with a MANN filter? Outside the obvious weight differences between 5w40 vs 0w40 please.

what do VW use..?
From factory:

- Shell Helix Ultra Professional AV-L 0W-30 VW 504 00/507 00 (= Pennzoil Platinum EURO LX VW 504 00/507 00)
- alternatively (depending on engine type) Castrol Edge 5W-30 VW 504 00/507 00
- starting week 22/2017 some lower viscosity 0W-20 VW 508 00/509 00 on European market Golfs (no details yet)

I know US spec GTIs, Golfs and Rs only require VW 502 00. However 502 00 is a
dirty old spec.
VW 504 00 is newer AND higher demanding = better. That does NOT necessarily
mean that any 504 is better than any 502 oil, but it actually does mean that any
oil meeting VW 504 00 spec is a very very proper oil, better than 'some' 502 00
oils at least, if not most.

Again, there is no 'best oil' out there. Use a proper one and enjoy your car. I'm
going to use the above mentioned Shell/Pennzoil 0W-30 and swap every 10 Mm.

;)

I use Schaeffer's 8008 Advanced European Performance Mid SAPS 5W-30 on my 2017 TSI (VW 502.00/505.00 approved and suitable for VW 504.00/507.00)... I don't drive it hard (between 70-80 mph on the highway) and it is not tuned. I check the oil level every week and mine does not burn oil. The Castrol it came with from the factory burned oil and I had to add 1/4 of a qt at 4,000 miles; I did the 1st oil change at 5,500 and put the Schaeffer's and have not looked back. Very happy with it. I am sitting at 17,200 right now; 2nd oil change was done @ 12,6xx

Just stocked up on a couple more jugs of M1 0w40

There is no objectively "best" oil, but there is a cheapest
:-D
