I tried something similar.
Used to my city where school zone is from 7-9. Then 2-4.
Was out of town and their school zone ran all day.
It was 11 and was going 38 in a 35. I came off a side road so didn't see the flashing light. Needless to say, I was shocked when I was pulled over.

I studied the manual for uniform signs front and back. Went to the city and pulled plans. I went out and measured letters to ensure they were the right height. They were.
Finally came upon school zone cannot end more than 100 ft past last crosswalk. And according to city plans, no crosswalks were listed.
I argued this. According to judge, I needed to bring in a witness from the city I.e. Civil engineer to corroborate. Had already wasted 5 days back and forth to court, so ended up just paying fine instead of appealing.

Tldr : easy to get out of these tickets on technicalities because cities mess up, but lawyer is recommended.
