HP is extrapolated from torque. It's not possible to measure HP, only torque.

I never heard of a calculation based solely on drivetrain loss. What's the formula?

I know you can use HP = (TQ*RPM)/5250 but I'm not sure you can use it on diesels.

I believe the drivetrain loss is calculated based on some cleverness with measuring the engine braking, but can also be estimated if the engine is dyno'd separately from the car. I believe it typically increases linearly with the RPM.

Also, the torque to power conversion is fundamental to physics and has nothing to do with the type of motor, so it applies here. The only thing that might change is if you use different units (such as kW and Nm) then the 5250 will be different.
