So I finally Replaced Fob Batteries

Remark:

I don’t think the fob sends any signal when not used since mine lasted about 4 years/48 months for the 1.4TSI we have. The Golf R is 3,8 years old and I haven’t replaced the battery of any key yet (delivered in Feb 2014).

Doesn't it employ a passive RFID tag, which uses zero power? Or is that just the immobilizer? Conflicting information out there on the interwebs.

This discussion prompted me to swap my batteries tonight. The car is 18 months old, so it was time anyways, even though they were still working fine.

Passive RFIDs work through being excited by an EMF burst at the host, and the RFID converting that energy into enough electrical current to power its operation. That's what is going on when you put your key up against the steering column.
