You should be able to just slide the red tab back in

That's what I thought, but it is firm and won't budge. This is the same as other side.

Could it be that I pulled it too far out?

Are you just trying to close it back in with nothing in the connector? I think it needs to be engaged (something plugged in) for the tab to slide back in.
