This is one thing that BMW still gets right - the battery belongs in the back - for better balance, and to keep it away from the heat of the engine bay. My BMW batteries always last FAR longer in the heat of Arizona than my VW batteries (and their replacements) have.

My VW Polo GTI has the battery in the back under the boot (trunk) floor.

My MK4 had the full box. It didn't help. My MK5 had the full box and I got 4 years from each of two batteries before I traded. The MK4 spent a lot of time in NW summer and winters. The MK5 only Florida. They say heat is bad but I think cold is worse.
