Hello Community - For those of us in the Midwest, Meijer has a couple of specials on motor oil.
5-qt jugs of Mobil 1 are currently $25.49 each, and if you have mPerks, there is a $2 digital coupon also.
1-qt bottles are $7.69 each but no mPerks discount.
This includes the FS European Car Formula 0W-40 which is rated for VW's.
So one 5-qt and one 1-qt (because we typically need to plan for ~ 5.5 qts) would be a subtotal (not incl tax) of $33.18, minus $2 mPerks coupon to make it $31.18. Not bad.

They also have a Valvoline special, where you receive an instant $10 rebate (applied at checkout) when you buy $40 in Valvoline-branded products. The promo is not listed on the Meijer website; I saw it in-store when I went intending to purchase the Mobil1.
Valvoline Full Synthetic MST 5W-40 is $7.49/qt and $24.99 for a 5-qt jug (jug is not shown on their website). So one 5-qt and one 1-qt would be a subtotal (again not incl tax) of $32.48, with no rebate applied. A net of $1.30 more than the Mobil 1 scenario above.

I wound up buying a 5-qt jug and TWO 1-qt bottles of Valvoline SynPower MST 5W-40, which would have sub-totaled $39.97 - just below the $40 threshold. (I sense a conspiracy. )
So just to be sure, I added a bottle of the Valvoline fuel injection cleaner for $3.79 just to put myself over the threshold for the discount. Total (not incl tax) after $10 instant rebate was $33.76.
So while I "spent to save" (which I don't typically believe in doing), for about $1.28 more (or $2.58 more than the Mobil 1 scenario) I got an extra 1-qt bottle and the FI cleaner. Which seems like a better deal to me; I can save the extra 1-qt bottle for my next oil change, and use the FI cleaner in a non-DI car.
Let's say in several months' time (depending on how much driving I do this year, which probably won't be as much) I'm ready to do another oil change. I then only need to get another 5-qt jug of Valvoline for $24.99, as I already have the 1-qt bottle from the previous purchase. Over the two changes, that's $33.76 + $24.99 = $58.75, or $26.99 per change. (Not incl filter or plug).
